He lived in Georgetown, Kentucky until 1855, when he moved to Clay County, Missouri with his father and family. He was educated at the Georgetown Academy, at Bethel College in Kentucky and at Mt. Jewell College, Clay County, Missouri, which college he left in 1861 to Join the Missouri Southern forces, organized as the Missouri State Guards. He was wounded at the Battle of Wilson ts Creek and was brought back from there to his home in Clay County, Missouri, where he remained an invalid for some years.

In 1871 he went to St. Louis, Missouri, and engaged in the stock business, removing to Kansas City, Missouri, in the year 1866, where he became vice-president of the Kansas City Live Stock Commission. He became a member of the Baptist Church in 1872. He is a member of the Sons of the Revolution and the Commercial Club of Kansas City. He married Martha Watkins of Clay County, Missouri, in the year 1874."
