Notes

"Born on father's estate, WINSOR CASTLE, in Charles Co. Maryland. Representative from Maryland, March 4, 1793-March 3,1801 (4 terms). Capt in Revolutionary War. Speaker Pro tempore of the House at various times from 1797-99. He was a member of the Maryland delegation in Congress which cast the deciding vote in the presidential contest between Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr in the 1801 election.

Appointed by President Jefferson U.S. Marshall for Potomac District at Wash.D.C. for his staunch support against Aaron Burr. When he was not appointed to the post of United States Treasurer as he expected, he moved to Augusta, Ga. in 1802 with brother, Thomas Marshall Dent, who was grandfather of Gen. James Longstreet, CSA. Settled about 12 miles from Augusta. Died after being thrown from horse. Was burried on his plantation in Columbia Co. I have a copy of his will dated 20 Dec. 1812. (The date may have been 1813) It refers to his "being by accident placed in a precarious situation". It was probated in January, 1814. This most interesting will was witnessed by Samuel Neilson, brother of Capt. John Neilson, His brother, Marshall , and his son, James T. were co executors.

He posted a $20 reward for the return of a runaway slave, Jack Hicks, his coachman, in the March 31, 1811 Augusta Chronicle.
He placed an ad in the July 21, 1810 Augusta Chronicle for the sale of a" family of healthy Country born negroes "consisting of a man and wife and 6 children for a total of $2,050."
