Notes

"He moved to Georgia with his parents. During the War of 1812, he served as sergeant in the 1st Georgia Militia Regiment under Col. Harris. He moved to Tuscaloosa, Co., Ala. He purchased 1077 acres of land in Tuscaloosa Co. on Dec 1,1826.

John Bealle also purched 80 adjacent acres on the same date. This was probably a relative of his wife, Martha Tennison Bealle. He purchased an additional 509 acres on Sept. 20, 1839. All of this property was situated in TWP 24N, Range 5E whcih appears to be about 5-7 miles South of Tuscaloosa. He was living in Tuscalosoa Co in the 1830, 40, 50 census. He later moved to Mobile, Alabama, where he became a commission merchant. The 1850 census also shows him a resident of the second Ward of Mobile, aged 64.

Tuscaloosa Co. Court records reflect a large amount of deeds from and to him. He was a merchant in Tuscaloosa. He deeded by gift slaves to his children on 8/21/1851. An article concerning him from B'ham Library records state, " General Dennis Dent was originally from Maryland. During war in Florida, he raised a company of volunteers in 1836 and serviced a campaign against the indians, returned to Tuscaloosa with great popularity, Died 1860. Member of M.E. Church" (garrets, p 159)

A deed recorded in Book Z, page 226 on 5/3/1852 in Tuscaloosa "-Dennis Dent of City of Mobile to Robert Jemison of Tuscaloosa, 320 acres in Noxubee Co, Miss, Collins Place 6 miles from Tusc., all accourts receivable of frim of Fountain & Dent, Benjamin B. Fountain, deceased". This firm was disolved on 4 Nov. 1851 upon the death of B.B. Fontaine.

"Dennis Dent became a citizen of Tuscaloosa Co. at an early age and engaged in farming and he grew quite rich. According to the Church Registure he and his wife, Martha Dent, were received as members of the Methodist Episcipal Church in Tuskaloosa, Jan 1, 1831, but the manner of receiving them was not stated and the indications are that they were members before that date at some other Society in the county and on that day removed this membership to the Town of Tuscaloosa. He and his wife were meembers continually from Jan, 1831 until they moved to Mobile about 1850. He was in Public life for many years. He was a Colonel of Volunteers in the U. S. service in the war with the indians in Florida in 1836. he was a memeber of the senate of Alabama from Tuskaloosa from 1838 to 1850. he was a Whig and a popular man."

GENERAL ORDERS- Headquarters- Tuscaloosa 8/22/1842-
The Regiments (4 total) commanded to parade for inspection and review by order of Brig. General Dennis Dent.\

He built a house in 1827 which is still standing at 1600 Deering Place in Tuscaloosa. The home is presently owned by Jackie Cummings. It is know as the Foster-Cummings House\. An article from a Tuscaloosa purblication is as follows:

"This home originally was three story and faced west, with hight, straight, steps elading to the second floor. In the 1930's the two top stories were moved south to the present location, making it a two story house with two sets of steps leading from gound to the first floor veranda. The ornate plastered frescoed ceiling cannot be surpassed. The graceful circular stairs in the wide entrance hall and the long veranda across the back with steps leading to the second floor are all orginal. The home has both Doric and Ionic columns on the first and second floor porticos.

It has been said that this was the first Tuscaloosa house to contain a bath tub with running water coming from a tank above. The home was bought by Charles M. Foster in 1827 and his name is still engraved on the front door bell. The structure is now the home of the O. M. Cummings family."
