5. Dr. Robert Thompson Coles, born March 15, 1801, married Eliza

occupied by Edwin S. Reid, and later moved to Alabama.
6. Mary Coles, born Oct. 18, 1805, married James M. Whittle in

Whittle, of "Eldon."
7. Jacob Thompson Coles, born Jan. 23, 1808, married Catherine
Patton, daughter of Dr. James Dodridge Patton, who moved from
Augusta County to Danville. They made their home at "Elkhorn"
(an old Sydnor place) and had issue: Judge James Dodridge Coles,

Coles, of "Elkhorn," Catherin Coles, who married Mr. Roger

"General Washington's diary continues: "Sunday 5th. Left the Old
Town about 4 o'clock A.M., breakfasted at one Pridie's (after
crossing Banister River 1 1/2 miles) about 11 miles from it came
to Staunton River about 12, where meeting Col. Isaac Coles21
(formerly a member of Congress from this District) who pressing
me to it, I went to his home about 1 mile off to dine and to
halt a day for the refreshment of myself and horses, leaving my
servants and them at one of the usually indifferent taverns at
the Ferry that they might be no trouble or be inconvenient to a
private family."
A few years after this Col. Coles moved to Pittsylvania and
settled at Chalk Level where he had purchased in 1785 5,000
acres of land, extending down the Meadow. Col. Coles represented
this district in Congress from 1789 to 1797. While in New York
he met and married an English lady, Miss Catherine Thompson,
whose brother, Jacob Thompson, was a member of the Queen's
Guard, an English body of troops, and whose sister was the wife
of Elbridge Gerry, a member of Congress from Mass. It is of
interest to note that when the question of slavery came before
Congress, Col. Coles of Virginia, voted to abolish the practice
of slavery, while his brother-in-law Eldridge Gerry of Mass.,
[p.202] voted to retain the same. Col. Coles, with prophetic
foresight, against the adoption of the Constitution of the
United States in its present form.
