Confederate Soldier to be Honored in Pearl River County,
Mississippi
At 2 PM, Sunday, November 9, 2003, the Gainesville Volunteers,
SCV Camp 373, Pearl River County, will honor Pvt. William G.
Wheat, Co. C ("Mayers" Company, raised in Harrison County, MS),
9th MS Cavalry, with a tombstone dedication and Confederate
Memorial Service. The Vols ask all interested and available
Compatriots to please attend and take part. We particularly need
riflemen for the rifle salute. (A cannon would be nice, if you
just happen to have one lying around! We have the crew to fire
it!)
The VA tombstone was kindly obtained by Hon. Andy Kincaid,
President, Joseph Wheat Chapter, Sons of the American
Revolution. The SAR and the SCV have formed a mutually
beneficial partnership in Pearl River County to honor the
county's veterans.
The Old Wheats Cemetery, where the ceremony will take place, is
maintained by Hon. Mr. Horace Wheat. Besides Confederate William
G. Wheat, the cemetery is also the final resting place of a
Revolutionary War Veteran, a veteran of the War of 1812, and
James Wheat, who was also in the 9th MS Cavalry, CSA. The
cemetery was the site of a hugely successful, multi-Camp
memorial service this past Memorial Day. Several newspapers and
WLOX-TV covered that event.
Local media will cover the upcoming Confederate Memorial event.
There is the outside chance that WLOX-TV will be there.
The memorial service itself will be a traditional SCV Memorial,
featuring salutes to the US, Confederate, and MS flags, the
reading of Gen. S.D. Lee's Charge to the SCV, a brief history of
the 9th MS Cavalry, unveiling of the tombstone, the laying of a
wreath at the gravesite, the firing of a rifle salute, and,
possibly, the firing of a cannon salute.
Again, the Gainesville Volunteers would like to invite all
interested SCV Members and their families to this memorial
service.
Compatriots interested in participating in the event should
arrive by around 1 PM at the Old Wheats Cemetery, located on the
west side of Hwy. 43, about  ¾ of a mile north of the junction
of Hwy. 43 and Hwy. 26 in NW Pearl River County at the
Crossroads Community (which is little more than a sign by the
road).
From Poplarville, take Hwy. 26 west approximately fifteen miles
to the junction of Hwy. 43 and 26, then turn right and look for
the Old Wheats Cemetery sign on the west/left side of the road.
From Boglausa, LA, take Hwy. 43 approximately five miles to the
junction of Hwy. 43 and Hwy. 26, then turn left and look for the
Old Wheats Cemetery sign on the west/left side of the road.
From Picayune, take Hwy. 43 north approximately twenty miles to
the junction of Hwy. 43 and Hwy. 26, then continue north,
looking for the Old Wheats Cemetery sign on the west/left side
of the road.
From Columbia, take Hwy. 43 south approximately thirty-seven
miles and look for the Old Wheats Cemetery sign on the west/left
side of the road. If you come to the junction of Hwy. 43 and
Hwy. 26, just turn around and go  ¾ of a mile back north.
A good showing of uniformed Compatriots would be most
impressive! Ladies and children in period attire would also add
to the atmosphere! Of course, period attire is absolutely not
required!
If you don't have a rifle but want to come uniformed and just
stand with us in the ranks of SCV Members honoring this CS
soldier, then please come on out and help make this a most
impressive showing of troops! We'd love to have you there!
Non-participating Compatriots and family members are asked to
bring a lawn chair and personal refreshments.
For further info, please contact Adj./Ed. Jim Huffman at
[email protected] or Comdr. Russ Foster at
[email protected].
Sincerely,
Jim Huffman, Adj./Ed.
