Quote: "My Grandfather's second son Peter, was a universal
genius, carpenter, blacksmith ect. he built a public tobacco
warehouse under a contract for the state of Virginia. He married
a woman whose name was Tabita Moss. She was a celebrated beauty
of her section. I have often heard the old negroes say "Miss
Toby was a puty woman." Peter after spending a number of years
in Buckingham moved to Franklin Co. Va. where he became very
wealthy. He owned it is said 13,000 acres of land there. He had
a store, blacksmith shop, saddler shop and other improvements.
He had three sons and 5 daughters. His wife died a considerable
number of years before him.
His eldest son whose name was John married a wealthy girl whose
name was Gibson.
His second son Peter I never heard of his marriage.
His third, James died but a young man in Montgomery Co. of
consumption and was buried at the family grave yard at James
Andersons where his grandfather Guerrant was buried.
His first daughter was named Polly, she married a man named
Calloway, who was quite wealthy.
Jane the second daughter married a man named Young and moved to
Texas, not very long after marriage.
Martha the third daughter commited suide in Buckingham Co. She
was sent there to break up an attachment which was distasteful
to her parents. She was placed at her Uncle John Guerrant's as a
permenant home while she remained in that part of the country.
She was vey handsome. She attracted the attention of the young
lawyers and doctors of the neighboring town, New Canton. Uncle
John had two singl daughters, who were regarded as not being
very handsome. They became Jealous of Martha and complained to
their Father. Uncle John told Martha she was drawing in company
which was quite expensive and that he would rather that she
would take up her abode with some other relative This so
mortified Martha that she attempted suicide in a few days by
hanging. She failed in her effort however by the rope breaking
but left her Uncle John in very short time and went to live with
her uncle, William Moss, where she accomplished her design by
drowning in a small creek in shallow water. She was buried at my
Fathers
The two youngest daughters Betsy and Belinda I have very little
knowledge of.
Uncle Peters children were very handsome, resembling your
mother. He lived to the advanced age of between 80 and 90."
