Notes

"Kingfisher had died while in battle with the Creek Indians. Nanyahi waited for her husband to head to battle, then she followed behind him. He was upset at first, but other wives joined in the battle. The battle was thought to be won, Kingfisher and Nanyahi were about to head back towards their camp, then Kingfisher was shot in the chest. He died in Nanyahi's arms.
She did not want the Creeks to have his scalp. She stood up and looked to the left and to the right, and she cried out with a loud war whoop. She picked up Kingfisher's rifle and fired. She hit a Creek warrior. Those around her saw her action and soon rallied to her aid. Word was passed along the line--the tide was turning. They were not to retreat after all, but were to rally and press on. Shouts of encouragement echoed down the lines. The Cherokees pushed back the Creeks and pursued them deep into their own territory. The battle was won!
The Cherokee warriors said it was Nanyahi's battle cry that sent all into renewed action. The word spread among the hundreds of Cherokee warriors gathered there. Then the messengers spread the news to all of the Cherokee towns. She became a great and honored woman."
