John Gaines was a Confederate veteran. He moved after the war to Coupon, Cambria Co., Pa. where he had a general store and post office until he retired to Altoona, Blair Co., Pa. Four sons were Pennsylvainia railroad men. John Gaines died in Altoona in 1910 at Willow Ave. and Third St. He was a twin, son of William Edward and Elizabeth Shotwell Gaines. Four of his sons worked for the Pensylvania Rail Road.
