Notes

Mary Winter De Hay was an interprising lady. In 1903 she and her husband opened the town's first furniture store in the Thornley Building on the north side of the street. This building was conveyed to them by a deed date Jan 30, 1904. In 1906 they sold the building. After her husband's death in 1916, Mrs. Winter purchased the building back from W. W. Rhame. Mrs. Winter became the first telephone operator with the exchange in her store. In 1939 after her marriage to Mr. Briscoe she sold the mercantile business and bought the telephone company. As of 1955 it is still operated in the building owned by Mary DeHay Winter Briscoe.

Notes

In 1725 son Arthur Whitehead, Jr. patented land in the area where Nansemond County and Southhampton County touch North Carolina,...

ARTHUR WHITEHEAD, who came to America with his mother, was a cooper (a
barrel-maker) and a planter. His main residence was Head of Horse Swamp in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. ARTHUR became an early land owner by virtue of a gift of 200 acres from WILLIAM RUFFIN in 1670 which was to be divided equally between ARTHUR Jr., his mother, and his half-sister, REBECCA THORNTON. The land was on Cypress Swamp on the Blackwater River, perhaps slightly southeast of the present-day Isle of Wight Courthouse. In 1673, he gave some cattle to his half-sister, probably as a wedding present.
About 1696, ARTHUR Jr. bought 200 acres from the STRICKLAND family, and three yeas later, he bought an additional 150 acres from the same folks. ARTHUR WHITEHEAD was illiterate, using an "X" on legal records. His sons were literate, though, probably because ARTHUR "married upwards". ARTHUR's father-in-law was a miller by trade. Birthdates reported do not work for this couple, though either the marriage dates or the birth dates may have been estimated. Were there two spouses?

Lazarus Whitehead and Nathan Whitehead are not listed as children of this couple in all records. Children, Arthur, Lazarus, Robert and William are listed by Boddie, op. cit
