Maj. Thomas HAWKINS II "the Immigrant"

1617 - BEF Nov 1677

ID Number: I57291

  • TITLE: Maj.
  • RESIDENCE: England and of Rappahannock now Essex Co. VA
  • BIRTH: 1617, England
  • DEATH: BEF Nov 1677, Rappahonnock (now Essex) Co. VA
  • RESOURCES: See: LDS [S1236] [S2099]

Family 1 : Mary LUCAS
  1. +Hannah HAWKINS
  2. +John HAWKINS

Notes

"Major Thomas Hawkins was an early settler in Rappahannock Co., now Essex, Virginia. There is on record a deed dated May 4th, 1659, from him and his wife Mary. He received the following grants of land: (1) 2,500 acres in Northumberland Co., on Potomac, February 26th, 1653; (2) 620 acres on the south side of Rappahannock, November 20th, 1657; (3) 2,611 acres on the south side of Rappahannock, October 6, 1675 [1,676 acres of this formerly belonged to Mr. Thomas Lucas, Sr. and Mr. Thomas Lucas, Jr., on which they both lived and died; and 934 acres lately belonging to Mr. Thomas Lucas, Jr., who left no heir, and did not dispose of said land]. His first wife, Mary, was either a daughter of Thomas Lucas, Sr., or or of Captain John Upton, whose widow, Margaret, married Thomas Lucas, Sr. The latter, in his will, proved in Rappahannock C., 1673, names his son-in-law, Captain Thomas Hawkins, and his grandchild, Mary Hawkins. The will of Captain Thomas Hawkins dated February 8th, 1675, was proved in Rappahannock Co., November 20th, 1677. Legacy to his now wife, Frances--certain property to be divided between his children (whom he does not name)--former wife's diamond ring and pearl necklace to daughter Elizabeth--legacy to his daughter, Hannah--to brother (Samuel) Bloomfield, a mourning ring, his sword belt and pistols.

Virginia Historical magazine: Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents: John Upton's widow, Margaret, married Thomsa Lucas. Near the end of his article a statement is made that it is probable that she had married before Col. Upton, to ? Underwood, and that her daughter Mary Underwood married Capt. Thomas Hawkins.

From "Virginia Historical Magazine, Vo. IV, Page 151" (found in Knoxville, Tenn. Library).
Footnote to article on Bacon's Rebellion: Capt. Thomas Hawkins, Sr. He was a vestryman of Sittingbourne Parish, Rappahannock Co., in 1665 and a justice of Rappahannock in 1670 or earlier. His will, dated February 8, 1675, was proved in Rappahannock Co., November 1677. his legatees were his wife, Frances, his sons, Thomas and John. He gave to his daughter Elizabeth his former wife's (Mary Underwood) diamond ring and pearl necklace, and if she died, gave them to his daughter, Hannah. There are on record in Essex deeds in 1659 & 1682, from Thomas Hawkins and Mary, his wife.

The eldest son was doubtless the Thomas Hawkins , Jr., denounced by Bacon. He appears to have been in service against the Indians in the year after the Rebellion and to have commanded a force raised in several counties along the Rappahannock. There is on record in Middlesex an order dated October 2, 1677, relating to 12 men, who, by order of the governor, were sent on February 1st, preceding, Major Thomas Hawkins, and who served until May. This Major Thomas Hawkins probably died unmarried before 1696, as in that year, and in 1698, are deeds from John Hawkins of Essex, only son and heir of the said Capitan Thomas Hawkins in 1662 and 1666. Elizabeth, wife of John Hawkins, relinquishes her dower. The will of a John Hawkins, dated February 1725-6, was proved in Essex, June 1726. His Legatees were his sons Thomas and William, and daughters Mary Hawkins, and Elizabeth Rennolds. The will of a Thomas Hawkins was was proved in Essex in 1739.

***Thomas Hawkins was known to be a Close friend to Lawrence Washinton, brother of Anne Washington, first wife of Frances Wright. Anne and Lawrence were siblings of George Washington's grandfather.

In his will Lawrence Washington made his "good friend, Thomas Hawkins" his executor. Thomas Hawkins was grandfather of Mary Hawkins, mother of Isaac Wright.
Virginia Historical Magazine Vol III, Knoxville Library--causes of discontent prior to the Revolution. Virginia Historical Magazine Vol IV, page 151, Bacon's Rebellion.
Thomas Hawkins will, dated February 8, 1675, proved Rappahannock Co., Virginia, November 20, 1677. Deeds in Essex Co., VA, May 14, 1659, & 1662, for Thos. & Mary, see Bol. III mentioned above. Deeds of Amherst Co., Virginia, 1761-1807, and Albermarle Co., VA 1748-1763, by Davis."
