William BASSETT and Bridget CAREY were the great great grandparents of William Henry HARRISON 9th President of the United States.

CAPT. WILLIAM BASSETT, (2--1), the progenitor of the family in Virginia, was an Officer in the Royal Army during the Civil War, and was later in Col. Rutherford's Regiment at Dunkirk in 1661. He came to the Colony prior to 1665, for in that year he was appointed by the Assembly of Virginia "surveyor of the whole work, and to have command of the workmen therein employed in building a fort for the better defense of the country at Jamestown." He was paid 10,000 pounds of tobacco for his services. He acquired large estates in Virginia; d.in 1671; m. 1670, Bridgett Cary, b. 1651; dau. of Col. Miles and Anne(Taylor) Cary, of "Magpie Swamp," Warwick Co., Va. (See Cary lineage.) Issue:
3--1. WILLIAM, b. 1671; of whom later.

Will of William Bassett of County of Southampton in the Kingdom of England dates 28 August 1671, probated 4 January 1672, Nathaniel Bacon was married to a sister of William Bassett. "My dear brother, Nathaniel Bacon, Esquire, and Mr. George Lyddall to be executors." Nephew, Joseph Foster, was given land in New Kent County, Virginia, and nieces: Ann and Mary Foster, to inherit when of age. Mary was not married in 1685, for we find the following power of attorney in York County, Virginia: Power of Attorney to Anne Bannister, wife of Moses Bannister (Above niece, Ann) in Isle of Wight County and County of Southampton, and Mary Foster, spinster, to Captain Matthew Rider of London, mariner, "Commander of the ship Barnable now bound for York River, to collect of Colonel Nathaniel Bacon, Esquire and Mr. George Lyddall, executors of the Will of William Bassett, legacies of 6000 lbs..." Dated: 2 April 1685.
