EDWARD PENNINGTON "the Immigrant"

ABT 1650 - 1701

ID Number: I32745

  • OCCUPATION: "Surveyor General of the Province." of PA
  • RESIDENCE: England and 1698 to PA
  • BIRTH: ABT 1650
  • DEATH: 1701
  • RESOURCES: See: Obit
Father: ISAAC PENNINGTON
Mother: MARY PROUDE

Notes

"KINSWOMAN OF WM. PENN REVEALED DEAD HERE AT 93:
Miss Annette PENINGTON Found to Be Last of Famed Family
The last of the famed old Quaker PENINGTONS to bear the name, a kinswoman of William PENN and eight in direct descent from Sir Isaac Pennington, one time Lord Mayor of London, passed with the death on January 26 of Miss Annette PENINGTON, 93, in her home 3215 Spring Garden Street. Announcement of the ancestry of Miss PENINGTON was made yesterday by Albert Cook Myers, widely known Penn authority.

Miss PENINGTON bequeathed $5000 to the Episcopal Hospital. She was a blood relative of the first Mrs. William Penn, who was Guli Springett, daughter of Sir William and Lady Mary Springett, through Edward PENINGTON, son of Lady Springett by her second marriage. Lady Springett, following the death of her first husband, married Isaac PENINGTON, noted Quaker minister and son of the Lord Mayor.
Edward PENINGTON came to Pennsylvania in 1698 by appointment of his brother in law, William Penn as Surveyor General of the Province."

Edward was the step-brother-in-law of William Penn, and appointed his surveyor general. His son Isaac was raised in Bucks County and moved to Philadelphia, and there the family stayed for many generations. The name died out as a surname in the late 1800's, but persists as a first or middle name in the family.
