The 1796 tax list for Wilkes Co includes John Reynolds in
Hickerson's District with no land and one poll.158 He is listed
in the same district in 1797 with one poll and 100 acres.158 In
1799 he is listed in the same district with one poll and no
land.158
The household of John Reynolds, Sr. is listed in the 1839 Wilkes
Co agricultural census. In that year, he had/produced 3 horses,
15 cattle, 15 sheep, 40 swine, $5 of poultry, 40 bales of wheat,
30 units of rye, 500 units of corn, 30 units of wool, 10 units
of wax, 10 units of potatoes, 100 units of tobacco, and 150
units of cotton.179 He was certainly one of the wealthier
landowners in the area.
The 1840 Wilkes Co census lists the family of John Reynolds, Sr.
as follows: one male (age 15-19), one male (20-29), one male
(60-69), and one female (60-69). He had eight or nine slaves:
two males (0-9), two males (10-23), one male (35-54), one female
(0-9), one or two females (10-23), and one female
(35-54).113,179
The 1850 Wilkes Co, NC, census lists them in house #446/446 as
follows: John Reynolds (76, farmer), Elizabeth (52), Elza (28),
Susan (27), and David Brooks (13). Their real estate was valued
at $2125.113 Elizabeth Brooks was John's second wife. Susannah
Jennings was Elza's wife."
