Notes

"The following tidbit is from researcher Barry Wetherington: The murder of Alethea Dare [Smith/Cook], the former wife of Walter Smith and later the wife of Reverend Cook makes for an interesting story. Rev. Cook was tried for her murder. Based on the article below he must have treated her very, very badly. He was found not guilty and eight years later slaves were hanged for the murder.

Article from the Maryland Gazette 1753, transcribed by Ailene Hutchins.

1 Feb. 1753 Mrs. Alethea Coook died 30 Jan in Calvert County "of several wounds & burns she rec'd. She was formerly wife of the late Walter Smith. Her last marriage was to a man whose cloth and stations in life ought to have rendered him exemplary for virtue and piety, but his horrid usage and unparralled barbarity to his wife, which decency forbids even to relate, is supposed to have been the cause of her death & he is now confined in the gaol of that county, in order to be tried for same."

26 April 1753 Cook was found not guilty.

3 July 1761 Slaves were found guilty of her murder and were hanged--they had poinsoned her and were executed 15 Oct. 1761.
