Hutchins.
1 Feb. 1753 Mrs. Alethea Coook died 30 Jan in Calvert County "of
several wounds & burns she rec'd. She was formerly wife of the
late Walter Smith. Her last marriage was to a man whose cloth
and stations in life ought to have rendered him exemplary for
virtue and piety, but his horrid usage and unparralled barbarity
to his wife, which decency forbids even to relate, is supposed
to have been the cause of her death & he is now confined in the
gaol of that county, in order to be tried for same."
26 April 1753 Cook was found not guilty.
3 July 1761 Slaves were found guilty of her murder and were
hanged--they had poinsoned her and were executed 15 Oct. 1761.
