"III. Augustine Washington, b. 1694; d. April 12, 1743, aged
forty-nine years, on the Rappahannock River in Stafford Co.,
where he located in 1722.
Augustine Washington((3)) (Laurence((2)), John((1))), of Bridges
Creek, Washington Parish, Westmoreland Co., Va. Married, first,
Jane Butler, who died Nov. 24, 1728, daughter of Caleb Butler,
of Westmoreland Co., by whom he had four children:
"Capt. Augustine Washington bought "Ferry Farm" in 1738 from
John Grant and his wife, Margaret (Watts), widow of William
Strother, owner of the land . Thus when George Washington was 6
years of age, he came to live at "Ferry Farm." There his father
died in 1743; his mother lived there until 1772 when she moved
to Fredericksburg to be near her only daughter, Mrs. Lewis, who
lived at "Kenmore."
1743 WILL: King George Co, VA, WB II, dtd 11 Apr 1743, probated
6 May 1743. "I give unto my son George Washington and his heirs
the Land I now Live on which I purchased of the Executrix of Mr.
Wm. Strother, dec'd, and one Moiety of my Land lying on Deep
Run." Deep Run, then in Stafford County, was about twelve miles
northwest of Fredericksburg, and on the Rappahannock river, and
so it had no bearing upon the Strother place and upon the land
opposite Fredericksburg now called "The Washington Farm' and
"Pine Grove Farm". In his letters George Washington refers to
the Deep Run land as the "Upper Place". As Augustine Washington
died the next day after making that will on the land that "I now
live on", he died on that same land. "Claiborne's Run" extended
several miles into the uplands northeast and eastward of
Fredericksburg. When in 1748 George Washington sold, through his
father's executors, a large part of the Strother estate
(preparatory to his removal to Fairfax Co, VA,), on which he was
residing, the deed of that sale clearly gives the bounds of the
land so sold, as being on the north side of "Drummond's Race
Track". Judge Alvin T. Embrey, of Fredericksburg, whose
collection of the old records of King George County comprises
the only extant complete index thereof, points out to us that
that old race track is still visible on the upland east of
Fredericksburg, and that the said Strother estate was not near
the present so-called Washington Farm otherwise called Pine
Grove Farm but between two or three miles and northeast of it.
In this same will Augustine devised the 2,500 acres from his
sister, Mildred Gregory, to his son Lawrence, born of his first
wife, Jane Butler."
