From VA Prom. Fam "in 1751 her son, Samuel Battaley, of Spottsylvania, was heir-at-law to his mother, "the only surviving heir-at-law of her father, Samuel Mathews." Deed recorded in King George, conveying 2,000 acres in Richmond County patented in 1654 by Lieutenant-Colonel Samuel Mathews, which descended to his grandson Samuel, who made his will November 16, 1718. Afterwards, in 1778, he was a member of the house of delegates from Chesterfield county. He married Mary, sister of Thomas Jefferson. He was born June 24, 1737, and died in 179--."
