"Paul G[rimball] was the first and only one of that name to come
to the shores of South Carolina...or anywhere else in Americaas
far as is known. He was a wealthy English merchant and married
his wife Mary in England...what part of England is not known.
"In 1663, King Charles II gave a large grant of land to some of
his friends...the Lords Proprietors, 8 in number. On April
10,1681, Lord Shaftsbury gave a grant of 3,000 acres of land to
Mr.Paul Grimball, Merchant, bound for Ashley River to settle
there."
"Paul Grimball reached Charleston in Feb. 1682 [PossiblyFebruary
1682/83; but he did not settle on the Ashley River. Instead, he
went to Edisto Island. He lived in the Colony for 14 years
before his death and held nearly every governmental position
except governor. He must have been an officer in the colonial
militia also. In the summer of 1686, the Spanish raided Edisto
Island. They came with three galleys, a hundred white men and a
force of Negroes and Indians. They sacked the homes of Governor
Morton and Mr. Grimball, the Secretary of the Province, who were
at Charles Town. They carried off money, plates, and 13 slaves
and murdered the brother-in-law of the governor."
Source: "McCrady's History of SC under the Proprietary
Government, pgs. 210-216.
The Honorable Paul Grimball arrived in Carolina on December
01,1682. He was a "merchant, gentleman, esquire"; owned the
ketch"Tryall"; and served as Secretary to Governor Joseph
Morton.
One of these early settlers, Paul Grimball, established his
residence on Edisto Island in 1686. This site is known as the
earliest tabby (construction material) house in South Carolina
(date of construction from National Register Nomination). It is
interesting that not only are the foundations remaining, but so
is a section of wall at one corner.
Children:
John Grimball b. 1659 in Charleston, South Carolina
Providence Grimball b. 1662
Ann Grimball b. 1669
Mary Grimball b. 1666 in England
Thomas Grimball b. 1675 in England
