Notes

"Mary Randolph Custis Lee: She outlives her husband, maintains a home in Lexington, Virginia. The great mass of the memorabilia of George Washington had been confiscated by the Union occupiers of Arlington, is stored after the war in Washington. She petitions the government for the return of her family's cherished heirlooms, but Congress still regards Lee as the enemy, and refuses. Widowed by her husband's death in 1870, she yearns for one last visit to the old homestead of Arlington, and even as an invalid, makes the difficult journey with her youngest son, Robert, Jr. In 1872 , returning to Lexington, she is with her daughter Agnes when Agnes is stricken ill and dies. Mary Lee thus outlives not only her husband, but two of her daughters (Annie had died in 1862). Her grief at this irony is overwhelming, and Mary dies soon after, in November 1873." [S2226]

Notes

"James Fowler Pressley, son of John B. and Sarah Pressley, received such education as could be had in the schools of the neighborhood till the year 1852, when he went to the S.C. Military Academy, and graduated in November, 1856. He entered upon the study of medicine soon over his graduation, nominally under the tuition of a Dr. Williams who then lived on Roy's Branch on the road to Kingstree about four miles from father's plantation. He remained at home and saw his precepter as he had occasion. When the proper season arrived he went to the Charleston Medical College, and graduated at that institution after completing the usual course. Immediately after graduation he commenced the practice of medicine in the neighborhood in which he was reared. On the 15th day of April 1858, he married Emma Wilson, daughter of David D. Wilson and Sarah Wilson (Nee Britton). He settled soon after marriage on the West side of Black Mingo Swamp on a tract of land presented to him by Col. David D. Wilson, his father-in-law. His practice soon became lucrative and extensive. When the war came he laid his profession and went in to the Confederate army as Lt. Col. Of the 10th S.C. Vols. To which position he was elected upon the organization of the Regiment before the commencement of hostilities. His regiment when first called out was stationed on South Island near the entrance of Winyah Bay. This regiment like all of the volunteer regiments of S.C. troops, first called out, volunteered for twelve months. Upon reorganizing for the war James Fowler Pressley was re-elected Lt. Col., and upon the promotion of Arthur Manigault (Col.) to be Bridadier General he became Colonel of the regiment, which was sent West and became a part of the Confederate army of the West, remaining with it while it had an existence. Col. Pressley commanded his regiment in all of the battles fought by that army from the time it left Shiloh till it got back at Atlanta in its retrograde movement. At Atlanta he received a shot through the left shoulder, and was disabled for the rest of the war. I have conversed with both officers and men who served in his regiment. They all bear testimony of his ability and gallantry as an officer.

After the war he resumed the practice of his profession, and when the Reconstruction Acts were passed and it became evident that there was no peace for the South, he removed to Cynthiana, Kentucky where he formed a partnership with Dr. A.J. Beale who had been his Surgeon in the Confederate Army and at one time Asst. Surgeon of the 25th S.C. Vols. When the rest of the family concluded to come to California, my brother James returned to S.C. and accompanied my mother and her family to this state.

My brother assisted by Dr. H. H. Poland of San Francisco, soon found a location. He settled in Suisun City in Solano County, and did not have to wait for practice. His health gave way, his physical powers were too serverely taxed. About the year 1874 or 1875, he removed to San Jose hoping in a different climate to regain his health. He would soon have been in good practice there had his health allowed. His heroic struggle against fate were of no avail. He died in San Francisco on the 13th day of February 1876, at an infirmary on Bush Street, where he had gone for treatment. He was buried in his own lot in the Fairfield cemetery.

I want to assure my brother's children that they may well be proud of their father. Few better men ever lived. Stronger love than existed between my brother and me can hardly be conveived. After we passed the age for childish quarrels, never a shadow of difference came between us. After his death his family took up their residence in Santa Rosa on King Street."

Honoring heritage and history
By Tim Fields
FAIRFIELD - As each is remembered, they all are honored.

From speeches to rifle volleys, members of two local confederacy memorial groups gathered Saturday to remember two Civil War veterans buried in the Suisun-Fairfield Cemetery. Under the shade of trees, petite, red flowers covered the tombstones of Col. Columbus Palestine Reeves and Col. James F. Pressley. Taps filled the silent graveyard with song.

"Our purpose is to honor our ancestors and to try to retain our history as it was," said Yvonne Young Miller, president of the United Daughters of the Confederacy Fairfield-Suisun chapter. The chapter was formed in 1992.

Miller's grandfather, James David Young, was a private in the South's army and died in the battle of Shiloh in 1862. Both of the veterans honored Saturday were remarkable men with remarkable lives, Miller said.

Reeves, born in 1830, was a scholar, businessman and solider. He was son of a minister and classmate of Samuel Clemens, aka Mark Twain. He joined the Confederate army as an aide-de-camp to a general but was taken prisoner in the battle of Springfield. Once released he settled in Suisun City and helped build the emerging city.

Pressley graduated medical school in 1858 and joined the 10th South Carolina Infantry. He soon was promoted to colonel and led his troops in many battles from 1862 to 1864. When a bullet shattered his left shoulder in the Battle of Peach Tree Creek, he went into politics and was elected to the state legislature in 1864. A year later he led a militia to defend towns against bands of robbers and Union forces that attacked and looted across South Carolina. After the war he moved to Suisun City in 1869 to continue his medical practice and in 1878 he died in San Francisco while receiving treatment for ill health.

Saturday, standing over the grave stone, was the colonel's grand nephew, Neil Hamilton of Rio Vista. Family history is something people all should be interested in because it tells where they came from, Hamilton said.

Charles Christian, a historian at the event, wished he were related to the gallant Pressley, he said. Christian is a tour guide at Old Rural Cemetery in Santa Rosa and is a member of the Sons of Union Veterans. All Civil War veterans deserve recognition and honor, he said.

The war tore a family from Kentucky right down the middle, said Louis Olker standing close Pressley's weather-worn gravestone.

"I'm like an S.O.B., a son of both the North and South," he said tipping his hat and holding his rifle.

Olker and two others from the Sons of the Confederate Veterans in Sacramento sported confederate uniforms and weapons to honor the two veterans. Confederate soldiers were part of a crucial time in American history and unfortunately many have been forgotten, he said.

"It's important to locate Confederate veterans' graves because they contributed so much to our country," said Ann Miller, a United Daughters of the Confederacy member. The UDC has recognized two other Confederate soldiers graves in Yountville and in Napa, she said. There are two more Confederate veterans in the Suisun-Fairfield cemetery and will be honored next spring, Miller said.

To Luverne Harstine, remembering Confederate veterans means remembering her grandfather.

Harstine's grandfather, Charles Hanger, served in the Southern forces from 1861 to 1865 and spent some time in prisoner of war camp. Union soldiers captured him after shooting him in the knee, she said.

Her grandfather said many times if it weren't for the injury he would've outrun those Yankees, she said. Tim Fields can be reached at [email protected].

"Robert with the beard had 3 sons, Robert, Gilbert and Jordan. Robert with-the-Beard built Elsdon c1080. The Conqueror died in 1085, the reign of his son Rufus was brief and troubled. When Rufus was asassinated the country was plunged into anarchy. During this time Robert may have taken the opportunity to take control of the liberty and the vital border crossing (or at least establish greater authority over the region) taking the revenues into his own pocket. Robert's second son Gilbert went to Glamorgan in 1091 to campaign with Fitz Hamon, Robert with the beard died before 1130 when his eldest son Robert built Prudhoe. Robert died in 1145 (aged c75) and Prudhoe passed to his son Odonell I."
