Notes

George left his estate in Orange Co., Va., was a member of the Convention of 1776 from Spotsylvania, and the House of Delegates in 1777.

George Thornton was the son of Francis Thornton and Francis Gregory, daughter of Roger Gregory and Mildred Washington, aunt of President Washington. He was a member of the Convention of 1776 from Spotsylvania. He had, by Mary Alexander, (1) Lucy Francis, married Capt. John Posey, son of Gen. Thomas Posey, (2) Reuben, (3) George Washington. After Thornton's death, his widow, Mary Alexander, married Gen. Thomas Posey, father of Capt. John Posey. (FTM CD-186, Gen. of VA Families, Vol I, Alexander Family, pp. 33fn.)

George died from drinking cold water on a forced march in the Revolution. Ibid., Vol. V, p. 57."
