Notes

"89. John Armistead((5)) (William((4)), Anthony((3)), William((2)), Anthony((1))). This is the John Armistead who went to New Kent and was vestryman of Blissland Parish in 1722.

Col. Wilson Miles Cary writes: "In 1868 I derived from Miss Sally Cary, of Gloucester (b. 1791), then seventy-seven years of age, of a most retentive memory, and a remarkably clear head for genealogy, the following account of her Armistead ancestry; and as she was the granddaughter of Col. Gill Armistead, who died in 1762, she would be presumed to know the facts from her mother, Susanna Armistead, who died in 1834, at the age of eighty-one (which would place her birth at 1753).

"According to Miss Cary, her immediate ancestor, William Armistead, of Elizabeth City, was a relative of Harry Armistead, of Hesse, in Matthews County. He had at least three children:
1. William,
2. John, who went to New Kent from Elizabeth City County and married Miss Gill, an heiress; and
3. Hannah, who married Miles Cary, of Warwick.

Col. John Armistead, of New Kent, had four children:
William, father of Mrs. Dandridge;
John, father of William, Agnes and Susan;
Mrs. Russell; and
Gill, who married Betty Allen, of James City.

Hence, to restate what has been imperfectly presented: Col. John((5)) Armistead, of New Kent, married Miss Gill, and had issue:
I. Gill Armistead((6)).
II. William Armistead((6)).
III. John Armistead((6)).
IV. - Armistead((6)). Married William Russell who had: I. Armistead Russell. Married Elvira Clayton, b. Dec. 27, 1759, daughter of William Clayton, clerk of New Kent, and Elvira, his wife. (Will of William Clayton, dated June 10, 1797.) Issue: Elizabeth Armistead Russell.

Margaret Jane PRESSLEY

22 Sep 1840 - 3 Feb 1855

ID Number: I33399

  • RESIDENCE: Williamsburg Dist. SC
  • BIRTH: 22 Sep 1840, Williamsburg Dist. SC
  • DEATH: 3 Feb 1855, Columbia, SC [168171]
  • BURIAL: Boyd's Old Field, Williamsburg Dist. SC
  • RESOURCES: See: [S1246]
Father: John Brockington PRESSLEY
Mother: Sarah GOTEA

Notes

"Martha Jane Pressley, dau. of John B. and Sarah Pressley, grew up to be a handsome girl, and one of as nearly perfect character as I have ever known. After receiving such education as could be acquired in the schools of the neighborhood, my father took her to Columbia and left her at a boarding school for young ladies kept by Dr. Zimmerman and his wife. About the last of January and after she had been at school scarcely a month, my dear sister was stricken down with a disease of the brain. James McCutchen, my mother's cousin of whom I have made mention, was then at the S.C. College. As soon as he learned of her illness he started for Williamsburg and traveled night and day to bring the news to father. My brother, James, and I were in Charleston, he at the Medical College and I on a visit. We heard of her illness and went up, he first and I on (I think) the next train. None of us got to Columbia in time to see my dear sister alive. Dr. James P. Boyce (D.D.) showed us great kindness, he took her to his house, and for our sakes made his splendid house a house of mourning. God took my sister to her home in Heaven on the 3rd day of February 1855. We brought the receptacle of her pure spirit home and laid it away in Boyd's Old Field." [S1246]

GILBERT UMFREVILLE

ABT 1075 - ABT 1135

ID Number: I56174

  • RESIDENCE: SCT
  • BIRTH: ABT 1075
  • DEATH: ABT 1135
  • RESOURCES: See: [S2041]
Father: ROBERT "With The Beard" UMFREVILLE of Eldons

Notes

"The second son of Robert with the beard, Gilbert went with Robert Fitz Hamon (also known as Fitz Haimo) to the conquest of Glamorgan in 1091. In 1095 he was created Lord of Penmark. This means that Gilbert must have been born around 1075 (Norman males could fight at 14) and could have lived until 1135 or later. William II Rufus continued the conquest of Wales started by his father and his vassals established a string of castles along the south wales coast in order to secure the Bristol channel. Welsh land was given out piecemeal to Knights. Gilbert would almost certainly have benefitted, he seems to have been given lands there as a vassal of Robert Fitz Hamon as we know that Umfrevilles held land in Glamorgan throughout the 11th and 12th century.Robert Fitz Hamon was the son of the Sheriff of Kent and was Married to Sibyl Montgomery the daughter of Roger De Montgomery the Earl of Shrewsbury who held vast lands in Wales. It was Fitz Hamon who established the first castle at Cardiff and was given Glamorgan as his fief and it seems very likely that Gilbert would have held lands there as a vassal of Fitz Hamon. After his death, sometime after 1110, and after a transitionary period Glamorgan passed through his daughter Sibyl (or Mabel) to Robert of Gloucester and thence to his son William of Gloucester.Gilbert's wife is said to have died before 1135.

So far I have no definate record of any offspring but it seems very likely that Gilbert created an entire new branch of the family as in 1155 a Gilbert Umfreville held 9 Knights fees3 under William Earl of Gloucester (1147 - ?), he may be the son of a Robert Umfreville who appears in Glamorgan before 1130 and he is probably a grandson of this Gilbert. William of Gloucester became Earl on the death of his father Robert of Caen, Earl of Gloucester in 1147. Robert of Caen was the favourite illegitimate son of Henry I and was married to the daughter of Robert Fitz Hamon.

The Glamorgan Umfrevilles acquired property in Devon through marriage in the 13th century when Sibyl De Torrington of Devon married a Richard De Umfreville and in 1233 their son, yet another Gilbert, paid a relief of £20 as a 5th of the Barony4. His descendants still held land there in the 14th century (there are two towns in Devon called Charleton Umfreville and Downe Umfreville). A Henry De Umfreville was born in about 1267 the son of a John De Umfreville and Alice De La Hurne. Henry married a woman named Isabella and in about 1298 a daughter named Alice De Umfreville was born in Wales. She married Simon De Furneaux of Stringston, England possibly in 1329 and died c. 1343. Simon died in 1351."
