Number 1, Winter, 1975: Estate Partitions in the Washington District Court of Equity, 1803-1826, SCMAR, Vol. III, Winter 1975, No. 1, p.15, Page 30. "Petition of Joseph Tinsley, James W. Tinsley, Frances Tinsley, and Matilda Tinsley of Newberry District sheweth that John Williams, the maternal uncle of your petitioners, being possessed in his own right of two negro slaves named Minda and Lena, by his Will bequeathed those negroes to his sister Elizabeth Tinsley, the mother of your petitioners, and at her death to her children. Since the death of the said John Williams, there have been born of the negroes Minna and Lena four children, to wit, Lewis, Charlotte, Dick, & Abram. The aforesaid negroes are and have been for some time past in the possession of James Williams, another maternal uncle of your petitioners, also of Newberry District. Since the death of John Williams about the year 1800, their mother, the said Elizabeth, departed this life, on which event your petitioners became entitled to the possession of those negroes. Petitioners pray a sale of the negroes.

Petition of Frances Tinsley and Martha Tinsley sheweth that they, with their brothers Joseph and James W. and their sister Polly Tinsley, have exhibited their petition for the sale of certain negroes in which they are jointly interested, but these petitioners are infants under the age of 21 and over the age of 14 years. They pray that their uncle James Williams, Esqr, be appointed their guardian."
