Notes

"1830 Covington County, Mississippi, 2 adults, 6 male and 4 female children

[From handwritten notes of Effie Norwood Jones on file in Magee, Ms. Public Library] After birth of one or more children, John & his family moved to Miss. They moved in ox wagons with Catherine and the children riding in the family carriage. Hannah, one of the house servants rode in the carriage to help care for the children. She was allowed to carry in her arms her own son, later mentioned in John's will as "Old Glasco," who at the time was only 3 weeks old.
The family setled at Corinth, Miss., later living awhile near Columbus. In or about 1815 they moved to what is now Simpson Co. The county was not organized until 1823.
John made 2 trips back to NC When his father died and when Catherine's father died. He assisted in settling each estate & each time brought back slaves he received in the settlements.

John Norwood accumulated much property, for his will written in 1858. After having provided for each of his 12 children at their marriages with slaves and land, disposes of some twenty negroes & land. He died in 1862 - his will was filed for probate April 9, 1862. A very interesting fact is that the courthouse in Simpson Co. burned twice but the will was found in Will Book 1 with a notation that the original was brought in by a son George one of the executors, & refiled in 1876 . L. W. Magee, in the County Clerks office, & himself a great grandson of John Norwood, found this will on record in June 1951.

John and Catherine were charter members of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, near Westville, Miss., and both are buried in the church cemetery. A peculiar fact is that there are no stones at the graves of Norwoods buried in that cemetery. Older members of the family living in the vicinity verified the facts that those graves have been pointed out to them by still other members of the family years before. The reasoning for this is explained near the end of these notes.

Young Glasco, grandson of the slave Hannah & who himself died in 1951 at the age of 111 attended, & assisted in digging the graves of both his master & Catherine also, pointed out the places of the graves.
John & Catherine were the parents of 14 children, all grew up & married in Simpson & Rankin counties. However, there is not a person living in either county today named Norwood, but several descendants of other names! [Note: The exact date of the handwritten notes used as the source of this information is estimated to be between 1963 - 1965.]

In testimony hereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal of office, this the 9th day of April A. D. 1862.
/s/T. L. Mendenhall

(note) The will of John Norwood was filed in 1862 and the courthouse burned in 1872, but in 1951 the author and the clerk L. W. Magee (a great grandson of John Norwood) found at Mendenhall, Miss. that the will had been brought in in 1875 by George W. Norwood one of the executors and refiled - see Will Book No. 1.

Note: June 1, 2000. This will was transcribed from the handwritten version by Bill Norwood from a copy provided by Mary B. Gibson of Seguin, Texas. She and her mother came across this will and other handwritten notes on the Norwood family during a 1999 visit to the Magee, Mississippi Public Library. The other handwritten notes have also been transcribed. It is possible that some of those handwritten notes were left there by Effie Norwood Jones during one of her research trips in the area.

Following a trip to the Darlington, SC area in April 1969 for a dedicaton of a monument to Capt John, Effie Norwood Jones of Dallas, Texas included the following in a letter to a relative: "The house Capt. John built in 1793 is still standing. The house his brother Samuel lived in. The one his son, Samuel occupied as well as that of the daughter Margaret Norwood Fort lived and died in. We saw the land our John Jr. sold when moving to Miss. 1812 and where the daughter Mary, married to Abraham Sellers, lived and died before 1825. Houses on both of these tracts are gone. Abraham and his 5 sons and one daughter sold their land 1841 and moved to what is now Calhoun Co., Miss. Many of her descendants live in that vicinity now." [Index 286, Effie Norwood Jones CD]

In another letter to a relative, describing the same trip, Effie Norwood Jones states: "So far as anyone has been able to learn, the burial place of only 3 of the 9 children of Captain John and wife are known. Joseph in SC, marked and Martha's, marked. Our John Jr. in churchyard of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Miss. (not marked]. Of course he died in 1862 during the war between the states (and it was) not possible to get stones that far away from New Orleans or Memphis. By the time his wife died in 1872, all the children except a son and the single daughter had moved from the state." [Index 286, Effie Norwood Jones CD]

As a side note, Mrs. Jones further states: "I had tried to press a cousin there to do something (about the gravemarkers) about it and I think she might, if she lives long enough. But she is slower than molasses in a winter freeze. I could not go into someone elses community and start pushing a thing."

Joseph W. TAYLOR

1849 - AFT 1902

ID Number: I18035

Father: Howell Lewis TAYLOR
Mother: Agnes K. GURLEY

Family 1 : Sallie M. SEARS

Notes

Letter written from Waco, TX, Mar 20, 1902. The William & Mary College Quarterly, Series I, Vol. 12, 1903-1904, pages 129-134, contain a printed abstract of the John Taylor bible. The end of the article contains a letter which reads:

"Mr. Woodson T. White, Waco, Texas.

Dear Sir: This register was copied by me in 1870 from the old Bible formerly belonging to John Taylor, the son of the original James, of Carlisle, Eng. It was at that time the property of my great-aunt, Mrs. Mary Blackwell, formerly Mary Taylor, who was at that time a very old woman. She promised to give me the Bible in her will, but her residence at Bartlett, Tenn., was burned and the Bible destroyed. She was a sister of my grandfather, Joseph Taylor, and a sister of the Rev. Thomas Taylor, who died in Jackson, Tenn., in 1877, I think.

Your friend,

Joe W. Taylor"
