Notes

John was a civil engineer in Garrard Co., KY in 1832. There is an article on John in the Compendium of American Genealogy. Sargent in the Revolutionary War and received a revolutionary pension. Volunteered May 1780 under Capt. Robert Hughes. Served 3 months. Enlisted again in 1781 under Colonel Beverley Randolph. Was in the battle of Guilford Court House, NC.

After the Revolution, the Bryants went west to secure lands. They crossed the Allenganies, stopping at the old fort on the Monongohela River where they, with 300 other families, built flatboats and floated down the Ohio River. They stopped at Bryan's Fort in KY where they lived for many years then moved to Indiana, where they were farmers. In 1855 some of them moved to Missouri.

Virginia Militia in the Revolutionary War, p.265: Bryant Jno.Garrard Kentucky

John made application for a pension August 20, 1832, a resident of Garrard Co. KY and 72 years of age, born in Cumberland co. VA January 1, 1760.

Pension granted August 22, 1832. he served fifteen months as a private and sergeant under Captains Hugnes and Porter and Colonels Nelson, Randolph and Goode as a volunteer in the Virginia Troops. His first enlistment was in May 1780, he was a resident of Powhattan County, Virginia. During the war he was engaged in the battle of Guilford. He married Mary Owsley in Lincoln Co. KY on May 25, 1786, and he died July 4, 1833. His widow applied for and received a penson. From the data given it does not appear that his father, James Bryant, made application. However, he makes mention in his declaration for pension that his second enlistment was a substitute for one James Bryant, though the relationship is not stated.

Very respectfully, D. I. Murphy, Commissioner.

He moved to North Carolina, where he married Jane Hamilton, sister of Robert Hamilton, on July 19, 1803. They later moved to Carroll County, Tennessee.
