Thomas MCGRAW (MAGRAH)

ABT 1640 - ABT 1722

ID Number: I51052

  • RESIDENCE: of Essex Co. VA
  • BIRTH: ABT 1640
  • DEATH: ABT 1722
  • RESOURCES: See: Possible Father or Brother [S1824]
Father: (RESEARCH QUERY) MCGRAW IRE > SC > LA

Family 1 :
  1. +Amy "Amie" MCGRAW (MAGRAH)

Notes

CONFLICT: father: James McGraw.
"Thomas Magrah" a planter of Essex County, Virginia, signed a will 21 November 1722 in which generous bequests were made to James, John and Phillip Gatewood. Witnesses: David Scott and Amy Baker, whose mark was a capital "M". She used the same mark 10 Jan 1706/7 when, as executrix, the will of John Gatewood was offered to probate. The mark, and the association of Thomas Magrah with the Gatewood family suggests the possibility that Amy Gatewood and Thomas Magrah may have been related. James & John were Amy's sons; Phillip was a grandson, a son of John, Jr; David Scott was Amy's son-in-law, being the second husband of her daughter Amy.

George Arthur SHOKES

ABT 1860 - ____

ID Number: I56419

  • RESIDENCE: Charleston, SC
  • BIRTH: ABT 1860
  • RESOURCES: See: [S2051]

Family 1 : Sallie MCCANTS
  1.  Robert Christopher SHOKES

Notes

"I am trying to place a few family names that are tied into the SC Huguenots c. 1765 St James Santee. I think they may have had land in the up state before that. I have seen reference to the Purrysburg Huguenots, but have not read much on them. I was hoping you could check what sources you have for my surnames.

My main surname is SHOKES, also found as SHOAK, SHOAKES, SCHOAK, and SHOOK; poss. CHOQUET and SHOQUET and SHOUIX.

Connected to that line is RITCH, RICH, ALEXANDER, McCANTS, WELCH, CLASTRIER and poss. JONES. (to name a few)

I came across one Swiss record that made mention of a SHOCH that wanted to emigrate to the Carolinas. I have found the name SHOKES and SHOOKS in the southwest part of NC. I have come across researchers of these families who insist that their lines came from PA, DEU. (German) ancestry. And that they came to NC much later than when my line showed up in SC.

We have been always told that our family was French. I have found a few spellings of this name in France, it is most prominant in Switzerland. SCHOCH and SCHOKE are a more germanic spelling, SHOAK and SHOOK are seen more often in the Netherlands.

Most of my research has been in coastal SC, with a few findings in the mid-state."
Janet N Jilote [email protected]

"He may be my George b. 1857 the son of George and Isabel SHOKES. George SHOKES b. c.1822 who married his slave. The children of this marriage continued to marry mullato, blacks, and poss. indian lines, only a few married white.
I also have a record of
Mary R McCANTS b. 9 Jul 1876 SC d. 12 Dec 1947 Los Angles, CA m. SHOKES this is poss. the sister of Sallie McCANTS. They may have married SHOKES brothers.

Do you have the name HAY, HAYES or CURTIS in your line?
My head is spinning. I have an aunt Annie Louise BEARD b. 1890s Chas, SC who married Harvery HAYES who was from FL.
Her 2nd husband was Eugene O'REAR. Her dau. Sally Anna "Sadie" HAYES O'REAR m. Joseph Wm. CURTIS.
I noticed the Arthur CURTIS SHOKES. There was a Mrs. Mary HAY living in the household of George SHOKES who Arthur may have been related to. Now to complicate things... my line is BEARD/SHOKES. My grandmother was Mattie BEARD, sister of above mentioned Annie Louise BEARD.

GEORGE SHOKES Request Information SSN 568-07-2422 Residence: Florida; Born 24 Aug 1892 Last Benefit: Died Sep 1965 Issued: CA (Before 1951."
