William inherited the greater portion of his estate, including
the family residence, and was one of the seven colonels
appointed at the commencement of the Revolution. He married a
Miss Willis, of Fredericksburg, and died during the Revolution,
at his seat,--Coventry, Spottsylvania,--and left a large family.
John, the eldest, inherited the estate in Essex, and succeeded
to the offices, civil and military, held by his ancestors. He
married, first, Miss Southall, of Williamsburg, and secondly,
Miss Armstead, of Hess." (this John is son of the above William)

On 12 Sep 1711, Henry purchased from Robert Richardson of S.
Farnham Parish, 100 acres for 3300 lbs tobo. Land is btw that
of Thomas Evitts & Robert Richardson, known as Cadd's Neck.
Henry appears many times between 1714 and 1718 in Essex Co. He
appears once again 17 July 1722 as witness to inv. of Edward
Faulkner. The next entry In 1728 Henry paid cash to estate of
William Covington.
1716 D & W 15, page 79, Old Rappahannock and Essex Co. VA,
marriages. Resided King & Queen Co. VA sometime between 1715
and 1742. 1742 resided Spotsylvania Co. VA., deed from Hugh
Sanders to Henry Gatewood of King and Queen Co. VA. "Living
Descendants of Blood Royal", page 326.
Henry"s Will, dated Jan 28, 1777 in Spotsylvania Co. records
Book E p. 269 names wife Tabitha, sons Dudley, Henry, Peter,
Larkin, Richard, William and his wife Ann and three sons
William, Austin, Ambrose; daughters: Keziah Sandidge and
Dorothy Foster; son Richard was executor. Wit: Edward Herndon,
Edmund Foster, John Frazier, Henry Crutcher & Anthony Frazier.
Will dtd Jan 28, 1777, bonded Dec 18, 1777 and settled Nov 23,
1778 in Book E, p. 190, Spottsylvania Co. VA.
"To wife, Tabitha, negroes Pharoah and Sary;
Son, Dudley, negro woman, Sally and her two children now in his
possession.
I let to son, William and Ann, his wife, negro Humphrey and girl
Siller.
To William's three sons, William, Austin, and Ambrose.
To son, Peter, woman Flora and her child, Lucy.
To Larkin, negro Rose and her child now in his possession.
Son, Richard, negro Joe and boy, Will.
Daughter, Keziah Sandidge, gold ring.
Land of 230 acres to be sold and after debts paid, to wife and
daughter, Dorothy Foster, and six sons, viz Dudley, Henry,
William, Peter, Larkin and Richard. Richard appointed executor.
Witnesses: Edward Herndon, Edmond Foster, John Frazier, Henry
Crutcher, and Anthony Frazier."
Henry Gatewood died January 28th, 1777. Sons, Richard. Dudley,
Henry, William and Anne, his wife, Peter and Larkin. Daughters,
Keziah Sandridge and Dorothy Foster.
