"HISTORY OF KENTUCKY AND KENTUCKIANS VOL.III Page 1641 by E.Polk Johnson: Dr. John A. Coburn was born at Germantown, on the old Coburn homestead, a son of James W. Coburn, former congressman from this district.. James W. Coburn was born In Mason county and his wife, nee Susanna Doniphan, was born in Germantown, in the house now occupied by Mrs. Patterson. Charles T. Patterson, son of Leonidas and Mary S (Ooburn)Patterson, is the fifth generation to occupy this fine old residence, which was built by Dr. Anderson Doniphan, who was a physician and citizen of prominence in the early days. He was the first doctor at Germantown and he built up a large and representative patronage in that town and the territoryb normally tributary thereto. Dr. John A. Coburn was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, at Philadelphia, and he initiated the active practice of his profession at Germantown, where he continued to reside during the remainder of his life. He occupied the old Doniphan home, the second brick house erected at Germantown, and he owned a tract of four hundred acres of fine land adjacent to it, being a large slave owner. He was a man of large mentality and broad humanitarianism. He voluntarily feeed his slaves some time prior to Lincoln's proclamation. Feeling was naturally high at the time and there was some talk of vengeance. The doctor was advised by friends to flee for safety but he refused, remark ing that if the wrought up populace determined to hung him it was his desire that the rope be affixed to a limb of one of the large trees in front of his house; this limb extended over the path leading from the main street of Germantown to the Coburn residence."

He was married to Elizabeth Machir WOOD (daughter of Benjamin Whiteman WOOD and Scotia WORTHINGTON) on 25 Sep 1837. Elizabeth Machir WOOD was born on 1 Jan 1814 in Mason Co., KY. Notes

"In 1910 census the family lived in Hind Co, MS and in 1920 the family lived in Greenville, Washington Co, MS. The widow was still in Greenville in 1930 with her younger children. By 1910 the census stated that Anna had had 15 children, 11 of which were still living. Only 10 of them were with the family so I am missing one of the Stovalls living children (in 1910)." [S3160]
