His wife was Amy. Page 25, Deed Book 1664-73 (Button to
Goodrich). He acquired a number of tracts of land.
It is a recorded fact John Gatewood was in VA January, 1663 and
January, 1664
**Nugent, Nell; "Cavaliers and Pioneers" Seitz Printers,
Richmond, VA, 1934
Patents 4 and 5, page 558......ibid page 562
On 9 Dec 1676 purchases 100 acres from John Gregory/Grigory, in
South Farnham Parish.
From "Cavaliers & Pioneers-Abstracts of VA Land Patents & Grants
1623-66 by Crozier pp. 558 & 562: "Jno. Gatwood was
transported by John Catlett 2 June 1666 and again by Mr. Thomas
Button (Butten) 19 July 1666."
The North side of the River was named Richmond Co. and the South
side of the river became Essex Co. The court records from
Rappahannock Co. were kept in the Essex Co. Court House.
Old Farnham Parish was on the south side of the river near
Piscataway Creek. John Gatewood"s land bordered the Awberry
Land. Henry Awberry was a large land-owner and an interpreter
for the Rappahannock Indians who were settled near Hoskins Creek
Swamp or Piscataway Creek Swamp. The Parish was set apart to
form S. Farnham Parish in 1683. This was the area where the
Gatewoods first lived.
The name John Gatewood does not appear again until 1676, when
John received deed from John Grigory for 100 acres in S. Farnham
Parish, Rappahanock Co. (Bk 1677-82 p. 127).
In 1681, John served as a juror and again 7 Apr-Aug of 1685.
In 1685 - Settlement of the Est. of George Boycess (Boyce), John
owed 316 pounds of tobacco to the estate.
"Colonial Caroline-A History of Caroline Co. VA" p. 318 by T.
E. Campbell states that John Gatewood purchased land adjacent to
Thomas Pitts (grant beyond the Peumansend) in 1688. On p. 25;
Records revealed that Kays & Gatewoods were living in Caroline
Co. as early as 1687, as they had land adjacent to other grants.
By 1704, John paid tax tithable on 400 acres. Some of the early
records no longer exist, but In later records mention is made of
the 100 acres his son John had received from his father that was
part of the land bought from Edwin Thacker; and the 150 acres
son Thomas received from his father that was part of the land
bought from Capt. Richard Haile.
From 1663 to 1706, the name John Gatewood appears approx. in 30
instruments in the county where he lived.
It is possible that the John as witness in 1663, was the father
of our John, who then starts appearing in records 1676 & later
on.
John's will, dte 14 Nov 1706, probated 10 Jan 1706/07 in Farnham
Parish, Essex Co. p. 328.
To eldest son John Gatewood: 100 acres I bought from Edwin
Thacker.
To eldest dau Frances Shackelford: 1 shilling.
To son Richard Gatewood: the plantation I now live upon.
To son Thomas Gatewood: 150 acres part of a parcell of land that
I bought of Capt. Richard Haile, now deceased, it being part of
5,000 acres belonging to Col. Thomas Goodrich, Mr. Henry Aubrey
& Maj. George Morris, all deceased.

calf.
To dau Amie Burnett: 4,000 pounds of sweet scented tobo, 1 bay
mare with a blase in her face branded on the near buttock with
this brand 3.
To beloved wife Amie, 3 youngest children Sarah, William & James
Gatewood: remainder of worldly estate, equally divided.
Exec: Amie Gatewood, son Richard Gatewood.
Wit: Joseph Baker & Thomas Wheeler.
p. 329- Making bond were:
Amie Gatewood, Richard Gatewood,
Jno Burnett, & Francis Shackelford.
His will is dated Nov 14, 1706, Farnham Parish, Essex Co. p.
328; John may have been married before as he states in this
Will; "All the rest of my worldly estate to be equally divided
between my three younger children and my beloved wife..." Execs:
Amy & son Richard Gatewood. When the Will was proved in court,
the Securities for the Administrator's bond was John's
son-in-law, John Burnett and Francis Shackelford.
He made bequests to sons John, b 1680, Richard, Thomas, Henry,
William, James, daughters Frances Shackelford, Amy Burnett, and
Sarah Gatewood.
