  3.  James NUTHALL
  4.  Elias NUTHALL

Notes

JOHN NUTHALL VIRGINIA-MARYLAND (1620-1667): John NUTHALL was born in London, England in 1620. He was the son of John NUTHALL, a merchant of London, and Mary HYDE. Emigrating to America, he first settled in Northampton, Co., Virginia. As a young man, he ran away from his master, Hugh HAYES, and lived among the Indians long enough to learn their language and served later as an interpreter. For the price of a hoe, he was purchased from the Indians by William JONES, who was trading in the Chesapeake Bay. NUTHALL was brought home "well strapped with ye halyards".

John was living in Northampton County in 1640. He became prominate there and obtained a commission from the Governor of Maryland to trade among the Indians for beaver furs, skins, and other articles. In 1651, he signed the Submission to Parliment in Virginia and signed the instructions to the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1652. Northampton records list NUTHALL as "London merchant and Justice of Accomac, VA". While records refer to him as "Merchant and Gentleman", he also engaged in the practice of law.

Eleanor Bacon HOLLOWAY, widow of Dr. John HOLLOWAY, became John NUTHALL's wife in 1645. Four known children were born to this couple: John, Eleanor, James, and Elias.

Records indicate that John moved to Maryland about 1661. In that year, he purchased Cross Manor and St. Elizabeth's Manor, estates of 2000 acres each, as well as 200 acres of land on St. Ingoes Creek. The transactions of these properties were completed while the NUTHALL's were in England settling the estate of Eleanor's first husband. After John's move to Maryland, he served as Commissioner of St. Mary's County. He was also referred to as "Justice of the Peace and Quorum".

John NUTHALL lived at Cross Manor from 1661 until his death in 1667. He died intestate sometime previous to October 10th of that year.

The Children of John NUTHALL and Elizabeth Bacon HOLLOWAY were.
1. John III b.c1646
