Notes

"Sir Walter Blount of Sodington is a cousin of our Blounts. Our Blounts are the Blounts of Astley, in Worcester, and not far from Sodington. Our Blounts do have royal ancestry, through the Cornwall family back to King John."

"The Blount family has been pronounced the oldest in North Carolina and this means of course in Tennessee also. No family, according to Governor Henry T. Clark, genealogist and historian, came to the Province earlier than James Blount, who settled in Chowan, North Carolina in 1664. He was a younger son of Sir Walter Blount, of Sodington, Worcestshire, England, and was a Captain in Life Guards of Charles II.

James Blount the emigrant, son of Sir Walter Blount, is said to have emigrated to America in 1664, though the settlement of Chowan is given as in 1669. He settled on a tract of land there which remained in the posession of his family until the death of his descendant, Clement Hall Blount in 1842. James Blount was a member of the Governor's Council and was one of the Burgesses of Chowan. He married and left one son, John Blount."

North Carolina Will Abstracts, 1660-1790: Name Location Will Date Probate Date
James Blount Albemarle County 10 Mar 1685 - Jul 1686
Will
Sons: Thos. Blount and John Blount. Son: Jas. Blount. Daughters: Ann Slocum and Eliz. Hawkins. Grandchildren: James and Sarah Blount and Ann Slocum, and John Hawkins. Wife: Ann Blount. Executrix: Ann Blount. Witnesses: Jno. Hall, Jane Miller and Wm. Dobson. Proven before Seth Sothell.

Prescott (1902) attributes the first two children, James and Thomas, to Capt. James's first wife, the other three to Anna (Willis) Rascoe. Parker (1979: 178) attributes all five surviving children to the first wife, stating that any children born of Anna died in infancy, though she gives no reason for this statement.

"In England the family can be carried back for many generations, to and through the conquest into Normandy and then for many years. So the Blounts can truly boast of being an "old family". With William the Conqueror three young Blounds, sons of Blound the Lord of Guisnes went to England. From two of them the English family sprang and in the succeeding years changed the family name less than most of the conquering Normans, for it now appears almost as written then."
