Mother: CRISTEN ferch Goronwy ab Owain (his cousin) |
Also on the scene were his half brothers from Owains marriage to
Cristen ferch Goronwy ab Owain, Christen was Owains 1st cousin
and was also the reason he was excommunicated. Her two sons
Dafydd and Rhodri came to blows with Hywel at Pentraeth in
Anglesey, which left Hywel dead. Gwynedd was then divided up
between Dafydd & Rhodri. Within a few years Dafydd showed
further ambition turning on another half brother Maelgwn who had
some sway over Angelsey. After being driven out of Angelsey to
be exiled in Ireland Maelgwn returned only to be defeated and
imprisoned by Dafydd. Another of Dafydd's half brothers Cynan
held Meirionydd, Eifionydd and Ardudwy.
Cynan dies in 1174 and the lands were left to his two sons
Gruffudd & Maredudd. In 1174 Dafydd expelled them from their
lands along with his full brother Rhodri who held some lands
within Gwynedd at this time. Rhodri returned for his lands in
1174 only to be imprissioned by Dafydd. Dafydd then turned to
cement his relations with Henry II asking permission to marry
Emma of Anjou Henry's illigitimate half sister. The marriage
took place also before the end of 1174. At which Rhodri had
escaped from prison and had managed to raise enough force to
turn the tables on Daffyd driving him out of Angelsey and all
lands west of the River Conwy."

After his service he built a two-story cedar log house on land
he had in Rutherford Co., Tenn. near LaVergne, Tenn. which was
so well built that he and his desendants lived in this house
until 1977.
Joseph Mason was for many years a planter, and also kept a tavern
being located about midway between Nashville and Murfreesboro.
He educated himself after having children large enough to so to
school, all attending the sessions together. He filled the
office of esquire (similar to Justice of the Peace), forty-nine
years in succession. All cases stood as he rendered judgement,
except one. He freed sixty-seven slaves, and owned 1,500 acers
of land. His wife Edith (Edy) died April 18, 1870 and Joseph
died May 6 1871.
Two daughters of Joseph and Edith Mason married sons of Edward
Gregory..Names of Children provided on Fam Group Sheets. The

Mother: Marian MACDONALD |
"William MackGahye was possibly James MacGregor, the son of
Patrick MacGregor and Marian MacDonald, who escaped Scotland for
America sometime after the Montrose Rebellion of 1645. This has
not been verified by any definitive means, but circumstantial
evidence tends to be somewhat supportive. This William MackGayhe
was granted a headright of 1000 acres in York Co., VA in William
Hoccaday's grant on 14 Apr. 1653. He is believed to have been
the father of William and Thomas MackGehee (who declared himself
to be formerly James MacGregor) although this has not been
supported by anything other than circumstantial evidence.
Other researchers have tried to connect Thomas MackGehee
directly with clan chief Patrick MacGregor, but this does not
seem possible. Since Patrick's son James is believed to have
fought with Montrose in 1645, he would have to have been close
to 100 years of age in 1724 when his will was proved and at that
time had three minor children.
The name of William MackGayhe's wife has not been ascertained at
this time. It is also not clear whether his two supposed
children William and Thomas were born in Scotland or Virginia.
According to Sir Iain Moncreiff in "The Highland Clans", in the
mid-17th century "one brother of the then chieftain of the
Children of the Mist emigrated to America where he was scalped
by Indians". It is fairly certain that the clan chieftain at
that time was Patrick's son and heir John MacGregor who adopted
the name John Murray. It is therefore possible that William
MackGayhe was John's brother James who is known to have come to
America.
Over the years, there has been considerable confusion concerning
the relationships of the early MackGehee families in America.
Although many researchers have attempted to make the connection
in order to establish a claim to a Royal Stuart family (and
Magna Charta) heritage, it seems quite clear that Thomas
MackGehee of St. John's and St. Peter's Parishes, King William
Co., VA could have been James MacGregor, son of MacGregor clan
chieftain Patrick MacGregor who fought with Montrose in the
Scottish/English Civil War in 1645. This Thomas most probably
lived his entire life in King William Co., VA on the Pamunkey
River where his neighbors included families of Butler, Lipscomb,
Ellitte, King and Slaughter. On 25 Apr. 1679, Thomas MackGehee
(who had purchased 150 acres of land from George Smith) was
among several who were given consideration for outright grants
of land in Pamunkey Neck on the south side of Blackwater Swamp
previously leased from the Pamunkey Indians.
It is believed that Thomas MackGehee was married previously
prior to marrying Ann Baytop (daughter of Thomas Baytop of
Staplehurst, Kent Co., England) about 1867 ??? in New Kent Co.,
VA. He may have had as many as four wives with Mary Mumford
probably being his first wife. Thomas' first child was William
who was baptized on 10 Oct. 1689 in St. Peter's Par., King
William Co., VA. There has been some speculation that this
William may have been born about 10 years earlier (in attempts
to establish him as the Quaker William MackGehee), but this
seems unlikely since a parish church was established by 1684 in
which baptisms in that region would have been performed. Thomas
MackGehee was appointed as land processioner on behalf of St.
Peter's Parish, New Kent and James City counties, in 1689. In
June 1699, the eventual ownership of the Pamunkey Indian lands
was still under discussion and among the 28 separate grants
listed was one in which Thomas MackGehee had leased 100 acres to
Daniell Grant. From the Land Patent Book No. 9 (#483), located
in the Register of the Land Office, Richmond, VA, the following
is abstracted:
"Thomas MackGehee, 256 acres, King William County, in Pamunkey
Neck; on west side of Nicaty Wance Swamp; adjacent to lands of
Holway, Andrews and Parker and along Andrewes Creek, to Mrs.
Pine's path. On 28 Oct. 1702, part of the land laid out
according to the Articles of Peace for the Pamunkey Indians, who
at a general court held 22 Oct. 1701, relinquished their right
and pretensions thereto".
On 10 Mar. 1702, James Johnson granted Power of Attorney to
friend Thomas Mack Gehee and witnesses were Edward Huckstep,
William Lacy and John Williams. On 7 June 1706, Thomas
MackGehee, Samuel Norment and William Lacy were sworn before
Daniel Miles as appraisers of the estate of Alexander Autrey and
met at the house of Capt. John Fox to assess the estate. On 10
Nov. 1713, Thomas MackGehee was one of several persons who
appeared before the Governor in council to argue for their right
to the Pamunkey Indian land. Thomas MackGehee's will was written
on 27 July 1724 and was recorded and probated shortly
thereafter. It must be presumed that he died in July-August of
1724.
Because of all the uncertainty concerning the relationships in
these MackGehee families, the debate over all of the possible
connections will no doubt continue. The most likely scenario is
that William MackGayhe was actually James MacGregor and that he
escaped to America sometime after 1645 to avoid the almost
certain prosecution and death he was facing in Scotland for
supporting the Montrose uprising. If this is correct, then
William MackGayhe was the son of Patrick MacGregor (the last
great MacGregor clan chief) and Marian MacDonald.
One disturbing point is that William MackGayhe would have been
fathering children in his 50's. While this is certainly not
impossible, it is unusual. It is quite possible that he had a
previous wife and children in Scotland and may even have had
other children in America. Alas, these things will probably
never be known with any certainty."
