Muscoe Garnett Jr. was the twin brother to William Garnett, and
he and his brother were born at "Mount Pleasant". He received
his early education from private tutors and in May of 1804, he
and his twin brother entered the sophomore class of the College
of New Jersey (now Princeton University), where he was elected a
member of the Whig class. He did not remain to graduate. He
married Maria Battaile in 1807.
Muscoe received under the will of his father (who died in 1803),
the lands he had purchased from Thomas Fogg, James Halbert,
Thomas Newman, Robert Beverley, and Humphrey Brooke. This land
comprised the estate which Muscoe called "Prospect Hill", lying
along the road from Loretta towards Fredericksburg and adjoining
"Elmwood" on the west.
During the War of 1812, Muscoe Garnett was active in the service
on the Virginia Militia.
Muscoe and his wife Maria lived at "Prospect Hill" until their
children had married and established homes of their own. After
Maria died, he sold "Prospect Hill", on February 12, 1856, then
consisting of slightly over 800 acres, to Dandridge Sale of
Essex, who owned property to the east. Muscoe then moved to
Fredericksburg, where he he lived until his death on April 10,
1870.
"Prospect Hill" like so many of the old homes, eventually burned
and now only a pile of bricks marks the spot where the mansion
once stood.

GATEWOOD by Gordan Jefferson Gatewood
Three brothers by the name of Gatewood came from England to
Virginia about 1745 or 1750 and received grants of land in the
Colony. The three Gatewood brothers were
Thomas, who never married;
William who took up land in Norfolk where the city is located,
and descended from the Kemp, Burrus, Capp and other Virginia
families;
James received a large grant in Carolina County extending from
White Chimney Tavern, on the South towards the Spotsylvania
county on the North. Above statements are given without
documentation.
John Gatewood appears in Old Rappahannock Co, VA about the
middle of the 17th century. John was one of the ten individuals
brought into VA as immigrants, by Col. John Catlett, June 2,
1666 to settle on the North side of the Rappahannock river near
the mouth of Omen Creek. Again, on July 1, 1666 he was one of
73 immigrants brought into Va by Mr. Thomas Buttons to settle on
3650 acres of land on the South Side of the Rappahannock River
about five miles back into the woods.
Mr. Buttons and Col. Catlett must have been operating out of
Barbados or Antiguia of the West Indies instead of England.
First census of the United States, 1790, lists twenty-two
families of Gatewoods, of the current spelling, living within
the confines of the original thirteen states; eighteen in
Virginia, three in North Carolina and one of South Carolina.
Twenty years later, the census of 1810, lists thirty seven
Gatewood families living in Virginia, and eighteen resided in
Kentucky. Of those families, 10 were in Caroline Co, seven
living in King and Queen Co and six in Essex Co, home of John,
the immigrant. So most of the Gatewoods chose to remain in
Virginia until after the War of 1812.
Larkin Gatewood gone to Elbert Co. GA - Larkin moved to Georgia
about 1790, with other members of the Gatewood and Higginbotham
families. Records show he received 200 acres in Wilkes Co. GA
in 1797, plus 350 acres more later in the same year.
