Patrick Lindsay died between 15 Aug 1744 the date of his will
and 16 Mar 1747, the date Mary, his executrix, presented to the
appraisers of the estate "a true and perfect inventory of all
goods and chattels and ? belonging to the estate of Patrick
Lindsay, deceased." The value of the estate was 430 pounds, 2
shillings and 6 pense.
Patrick Lindsay had a town lot in Williamsburgh Township in
1736-7, Craven County, now Williamsburg County. His will was
written in Williamsburg on 15 Aug 1744, proved 1 Jun 1747.
The will is badly damaged however he bequested "one sixth of
my temporal estate and one third of my real estate" to his wife
during her widowhood. To me this would indicate five children
and one wife, also, just two sons who were named, James and
William. The daughters were not named. Witnesses were (our)
James McCants and John Linen. Executors were wife Mary,
(-Thomas McCants, Jr.(-Thomas McCree, Jr) and (our) James
McCants. Wit: Thomas McCree, John Linien, James McCants. Part
of will in original destroyed.
16 Jan 1741, Land Grant conveyed to James Lindsay abt 1769.
Memorial for 125 Acres, Williamsburg Township, Craven Co. Rev.
War Claim File # 4594.
Patrick Lindsay, David and John McCants, John, James and William
Scott were among the names of the heads of families who had
settled in Williamsburg-Township up to 1737.
These original settlers came from England, Ireland, Scotland,
Germany, Holland, and from the New England States, Pennsylvania
and Virginia. They were all about the same class of men, people
who had been non-conformists as to State-Church religion, and
nearly all of their families had lost their property in the
religious conflicts of the 17th century. The great number of
them had lived in Ireland for many years before coming to
America. They had migrated from England and from Scotland to
Ireland on account of fair promises on the part of the English
King. These failing them, they sought refuge in America.
