Notes

John Cherry was the first Cherry ancestor in America arriving in Virginia in 1635. Oliver Spry received 300 acres in Upper Norfolk Co. Virginia for transporting James Hicks, John Longworthy, Thomas Bush, John Dawson, George Wilcox and John Cherry in June of 1635.

Mrs. Nell (Sachse) Woodard, a professional genealogist, went to England several years ago. She was trying to identify and prove the parents of John Cherry [35] (b. abt 1619 England?). This is the John Cherry who was the first Cherry to set foot on the American Continent. Mrs. Woodard ended up proving that neither John Cherry ("The Younger") nor his father (John Cherry, "The Elder") was the father of the John Cherry [35] who came to Lower Norfolk Co., VA in 1635 with Oliver Sprye.

We still do not have any proven set of parents in England for John Cherry [35]. It is my opinion that all those folks doing Cherry research who attach John Cherry [35] (b. abt 1619) to a set of parents in England, simply have made an assumption, with no documentation at all to support the assumption. Notes

"#8872: Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Franklin Co. DAVID L. SUBLETT was born in Virginia June 22, 1837, and is the fourth son of Thomas S. and Sarah E. (Lackland) Sublett, all natives of Virginia.

David L. Sublett was educated at the Episcopal high school, Alexandria, Va., and at the Virginia Military Institute. In 1859 he went to Texas and taught the male academy at Waco about six months, and the same year entered the State military service and became captain of
cavalry until the breaking out of the war. In 1861 he entered the Confederate Army in the Fourth Texas Regiment as lieutenant, and went to Virginia. In 1862 he was appointed aid [sic]-de-camp to Brig. Gen. J. B. Hood; was subsequently appointed chief of ordnance of Hood's corps, and afterward of Lieut. Gen. S. D. Lee's corps, and surrendered at Greenburg,
N.C., in April, 1865.

He was then superintendent of the Carbon Hill Coal Mines, and a civil and mining engineer up to August, 1871. June 13, 1871, he married Mattie F. Owen, of Prince Edward County, Va., daughter of Dr. Thomas J. and Louisa (Rudd) Owen, but no children have blessed their union.

He came to Kentucky in 1872 as engineer on the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad and located at Mount Sterling, but remained only six months. He then moved to Louisville and remained four years, following his profession; then moved to Ohio County, as superintendent and engineer of mines, remaining there two years; then went back to Louisville. March 5, 1878, he went to
Chattanooga, Tenn., and had charge of Government service on the Chataboota River and Mussell Shoals Canal, Alabama.

In June 1880, he was appointed United States resident engineer on the Kentucky River at Frankfort, in charge of the improvements and operating and care, etc., of the slackwater system, and held the position until December 1, 1886, when he resigned on account of ill health, and resumed his profession of civil and mining engineer."
