Thomas OGLESBY Jr.

ABT 1750 - ABT 1833

ID Number: I73836

  • RESIDENCE: Albemarle and Bedford Cos. VA and Elbert Co. GA
  • BIRTH: ABT 1750, Albemarle Co. Virginia
  • DEATH: ABT 1833, Elbert Co. Georgia
  • RESOURCES: See: [S3165]
Father: Thomas OGLESBY "the Immigrant"

Family 1 : Martha BRADLEY
  1. +William OGLESBY

Notes

Legislative petition abstacts for November, 1791 published in "The Magazine of Virginia Genealogy," Vol. 32, No. 4, p. 270, lists Thomas Oglesby as one of the Freeholders of Campbell County signatory to a petition for '. . . an Inspection of tobacco at the mouth of Bent Creek in this county [Buckingham] will be of infinite utility - it being the most eligible situation on the river between Lynchburg and Warminster with an easy road for the conveyance of produce from the adjacent counties (to wit) Campbell, Prince Edward, Charlotte, and Amherst.' And [on p. 273] in October, 1792, Thos. Oglesby is signatory to a petition for the establishment of both a ferry across the Fluvanna River and the establishment of a town on the site of the [presumably] successful Inspection petitioned for in the previous year.

As with many other fellow Virginians, after the Revolution tobacco became less and less lucrative, partly because of its demands on the soil but even more because the overseas [London] market had diminished, so Thomas joined that group of hundreds who removed to Georgia and settled "up Broad River." On December 3, 1796, he purchased 250 acres of land on Pennington Fork of Dove's Creek, near the current line between Elbert and Madison Counties.

Men of Mark in Georgia (p. 524) states: "The first Oglesby of this line who came to Georgia was Thomas Oglesby. . . ; he was granted lands in Elbert County for services in the Revolutionary War, and settled at what is now known as Oglesby, Ga. Here Thomas Oglesby reared a family of ten children--nine boys and one girl." Note the discrepancy in total number of children; DAO shows 12 (9 boys and 3 girls), one of whom never left Virginia (Salley), so there is still a difference of one child--either Polly or Mary Lucinda.

From "Official Register of Land Lottery of Georgia, 1827":
48th Day's drawing - May 1, 1827
Elbert [p 149]
Fortunate Drawers: Thomas Oglesby, R.S.
Captains District: Deadwilders
Number: 172
District 6
County: Muscogee County

1830 Georgia census [Elbert Co., p 119] lists Thomas Oglesby as a head of household, 1 male aged 70-80.
