Was Judith Gerard the wife of William Love and "Maj. Boarman"?
Was she the mother of the Goldsmith children? As much as I might
like her to be, she probably is not. There is a relationship
somewhere, but it hasn't been discovered yet. It could be
through the Slye family.
In the Archives of Maryland is this entry concerning the length
of service Of some of Thomas Gerard's servants: Archives of
Maryland, Volume 49, Provincial Court Proceedings, 1663-64. Page
123;
At the time of his (John Goldsmith) death, his wife was Judith.
It could be that he was married twice and that Judith was his
second wife who had been married previously to William Love
whose son Thomas stated that Robert Slye married one of his
sisters. If that's the case, Judith was not the mother of most
of the Goldsmith children.
1711: Deposition of Capt. Thomas Love of SMC, age about 53 re:
"Norwood"; recalls hunting with Robert Slye who married one of
his sisters (MD Chancery Records). So was she Judith Love?
The Deposn of Judith Love aged 22 yeares or thereabouts sworne
the 4th Octobr 1662. Sayth That she this Depont was prnt att Mr.
Gerards quartering howse att Mattapany when Capt Hinfeild
brought thither certaine Irish servants to sell unto Mr Gerard,
Arid further sayth tht shee did see the sd Hinfeild threaten the
sd servants wth his Kane & say to them That they should serue
ffiveteene yeares, & this Depont further sayth tht when the sd
Hinfeild was thus threatning of them, & saying hang them Rogues
they shall serve ffiveteene yeares there was certaine wryting a
drawing & further sayth not Judith Love" X" her marke Jurat
Coram me Thomas Turner.
John Goldsmith has this line in his 17 Apr 1683 will "to
son-in-law Thomas Love". There is this phrase in the Jun 16 1696
Administration of John Goldsmith's estate. (Judith Gerard
married next Richard Clouds) "Payments to: Thomas Love paid by
Mrs. Clouds before her marriage to Maj. Boarman."
Samuel Love gave this deposition (abstract) concerning Westwood
Manor: "LOVE, Samuel, age 72, 24 July 1758, stated that both his
mother and grandmother told him about the beginning tree of
Westwood Manor, that his grandmother owned 100 a. of the said
Manor, and that his grandfather bought the said 100 a. from
Thomas Garrard; CHLR H#3 572" [Maryland Genealogical Society
Bulletin; Winter 1993 Vol 34 No 1; Charles County Depositions by
Robert W. Barnes; Continued from vol. 33, no 4, p. 693;
CHLR=Charles County land records (followed by Book:page, if
known).]

Linda thinks it is highly unlikely that Judith Gerard, daughter
of this Thomas, would be the wife of John Goldsmith, She was not
transported with this Thomas along with the other 5 children
named, and if she was married at the time listed, she was born
prior to 1641."
