Notes

Notable Southern Families, Volumes I & II: The Reverend Theophilus Jones in his history gives Brecon City, Wales, as the home of the family at the earliest known period of its history and also gives the genealogy of the family and many valuable facts concerning it. From Howel the Good the line is traced to Einon Sais (who had lived in England and inherited the estate of Castle Einon Sais), his son Howel and his son, Llewellyn-ap-Hoel, the father of Roger, Griffith, Richard, William, Helen and David-ap-Llewellyn, later known as David Gam, a conspicuous and potential personage in Wales in the early part of the fifteenth century, a man of courage and judgment; of dauntless spirit and soldierly tact. By his personal daring on the Field of Agincourt (1415) he saved the life of Henry V., but was himself mortally wounded. He was knighted by his King just before he died. He entered the King's military service as David-ap-Lllewellyn, but having a squint eye, the word signifying it, "Gam," was applied to him and he was knighted Sir David Gam and herein we find the origin of the name Gaines. The name remained Gam through two generations. His great grandson added "es" and thereafter it was Games; which form was adhered to in Wales, but in England it became Ganes, Gaynes and finally Gaines. Thomas Jones, an eminent genealogist, in 1599, makes this important statement: "From this Sir David Gam all ye Games of Brecknogshire, all ye Vaughns, and all ye Herberts of South Wales are descended and ye most part of all the nobility of England."

William Herbert and the Earl of Pembroke were great grandsons of Gladis, daughter of Sir David Gam. They were the friends and patrons of Shakespeare, and it was at Wilton, the home of the Earl of Pembroke, that King James, on December, second, 1603, first witnessed a performance of one of Shakespeare's plays. The Herberts took an active part in the early settlement of America, and were members of the Virginia Company organized by Sir Walter Raleigh, Morgan, the eldest son of Sir David Gaines (Gam) was great-great-grandfather of Sir John Gaines (1559-1606) of Newton, County of Brecon, Wales, from whom the Gaines family of Virginia is believed to descend.

See http://www.angelfire.com/nt/oddentree/gaines.html.
"Although Shakespeare penned this work nearly two hundred years after the Battle of Agincourt (1415), it remains the finest dramatic interpretation of what leadership meant to the men in the Middle Ages.

Prior to the Battle, Henry V had led his English footmen across Northwestern France, seizing Calais and other cities in an attempt to win back holds in France that had once been in English possession and to claim the French crown through the obscure but powerful Salig Law.

The French, aware of Henry's troops weakening condition because of their distance from England and the attacks of Dysentery that had plagued the dwindling band, moved between King Henry and Calais, the port he needed to reach in order to return to England. The troops followed Henry's band along the rivers, preventing their crossing and daring them to a battle they thought they could not win.

The English knights fought on foot after the manner devised by Edward III. Archers were to be used in support, the English and Welsh longbows having established their credentials both at Crecy (1347) and at Poiters (1356). But here the French seemed to have sufficient numbers to deal with even this threat, and they refused to allow Henry pass, angered by the English seizure of the cities.

Morale in the English line as they looked upon the overwhelming force of heavily armoured, highly skilled French knights must have been extremely low. King Henry, rising to the occasion, spoke words of encouragement that rallied the English troops and carried them to a victory. As a result of the victory the French Princess Catherine was betrothed to Henry V, and France and England were at peace for the remainder of Henry's short life. He perished of dysentery in 1422, but was survived by his son (Henry VI) and was buried at Westminster Abbey, close to the shrine of Edward the Confessor.

Although the speech below is a work of fiction, it is evocative of the spirit with which Henry--and all strong medieval kings--ruled through the strength of their convictions and by force of their personality."
