Mary's father, James Pettigrew sold his lands in PA and rented a
farm in Lunenburg County VA for a while. They did not stay in VA
very long but migrated further south into the Carolinas, where
they settled in the Abbeville District of SC in about 1758. Mary
married John Verner in about 1758. John Verner migrated with the
Pettigrew family into SC."

Mary and John had 11 children:
Mary Verner m. Caldwell Ewing; in 1786, and moved to Indiana
Territory, and had many children.
David Verner (1760-1852), who served in the Amer. Rev. m. Esther
Turpin, and had 4 children: Mary Verner (1782-1860), A child who
died as an infant., David Verner, Jr. (1788-1857), Caleb Verner
(1802-1864).
James Verner; b. 1762, Capt. in Rev. Army, died c1780 in British
prison in Charleston SC of smallpox.
John Verner, Jr. (1763-1853)
Samuel Verner (1764-1783), migrated to TN.
George Verner (1765-1853) m. Mary Dobson
Sarah Verner; b. 1768. m. James Montgomery; in about 1790, and
had 7 children.
Nancy Verner; b. 1770
Diannah Verner; b. 1772 m. William Henry Wakefield (1765-1817)
Diannah and William settled in Illinois and had 9 children.
Charles Verner; b. c1775.

on File, Roll No. 735 in Anderson SC, recorded in the Record of
Pendleton County Book C. P. 154, Jan. 24, 1799.
In the name of God Amen
I, John Verner being weak of body, and considering the mortality
of life, do devise this my last will and testament, but being of
perfect mind and memory, do devise, that I ordain my affairs in
the manner and form following, Viz, First, I recommend my soul
into the hand of God, who gave it in hope that He will receive
it, and my Body I commend to the dust to be Buried in a decent
Christian manner, that at the Resarrection of the Just it may be
Reunited to my soul that I may obtain Eternal Happiness.
As touching such worldly Estate as it has pleased God to intrust
me with, I do hereby devise and dispose of in manner and form
following Viz--
Item 1st: I devise and ordain that my son George Verner receive
one hundred and fifty acres of the tract of land on which I now
live, to be measured off the lower end next to the river
including my Mill, and also the Fishery adjoining said land on
that part thereof that is my own. I do devise to be his the said
George Verner but not until after the decease of my beloved Wife
Mary Verner.
Secondly: I devise and desire that the other part of my land
remain in the possession of my Wife Mary Verner until her death
and then after the decease of to be the property of my son
Charles Verner.
Thirdly: I do devise and ordain that my Beloved Wife Mary Verner
keep in her possession my Negro man Jo, during her life and at
her death, the aforesaid Negro Jo is to be the property of my
son Charles Verner.
Fourthly: I devise and ordain that my son Samuel Verner does
receive one hundred and fifty dollars.
Fifthly: I desire and ordain that my sons David and John Verner
receive that tract or parcel of land lying on Rocky River
containing two hundred acres, known by the name of Nochmaroon
tract.
Sixthly: I desire and ordain, that my Wife Mary Verner, have at
her own disposal all my household furniture and after the
decease of my Wife Mary Verner, all my stock of stores, cows,
sheep, and hogs must be equally divided between my daughters,
Jenny, and Nancy Verner.
Seventhly: I devise that my daughter Diannah Wakefield receive
twenty dollars.
Eightly: I do devise that my daughters Sarah Montgomery and Mary
Ewing shall receive if demanded each the sum of one dollar.
Lastly: I ordain my beloved Wife Mary Verner and my son David
Verner to be my Executors, to this my last will and testament
renouncing every former will, do establish this to be in full
force and virtue, and do hereby this tenth day of February set
my hand and affix my seal in the Year of our Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ one thousand seven hundred and ninety eight.
