Notes

"English line in various genforums, especially VASS, VAUSE, VAUX, and VAULX. John Vause of Middlesex County, Virginia: There were two men named John Vause in Middlesex in the 17th century: the elder John1 Vause (designated John1 hereafter), and his son (designated John2).

John1 may be the man who arrived in Virginia as a headright for John Georges of Charles City County on 24 Jul 1638 (C&P I:214). He was in old Lancaster County (the part that later became Middlesex) by 1655 when Richard Coleman sold 600 acres to John1 Vause and William Veale or Neale, being a patent to the said Richard Coleman bearing date 14 7bert 1650 (14 Sep 1650). This tract adjoined the land of George Mosley.

John1's will was proved 1 Mar 1678/80. It names Elizabeth, son John2, and daughters Diana2 and Catherine2. There is no mention of any Margaret Vause or Vaulx in John1's will or in the probate of his estate.

John1 Vause died, according to the records of Christ Church parish, on 26 Feb 1679/80 and was "buried in Mr. Christopher Robinson's orchard." Some claim this is the present day house called "Hewick" still standing near Urbanna in Middlesex County.

John1 Vause was very prominent, and appears frequently in the records of Christ Church parish Middlesex, where he was a vestryman. He was also well acquainted with Rowland Burnham and Ralph Wormeley who were connected with the other Vaulx brothers--Humphrey, Thomas, Robert and James--in York County, VA."

There was also a Vaus(e) family in Middlesex County, VA which is the country just south of Essex. The records there mention the will of a John Vaus who died 26 Feb 1679/80. His wife was buried 25 Dec 1679/80. His will was dated 22 Feb 1679/80, proved 1 Mar 1679/80.

His children included son John Vaus who married Elizabeth Weekes, widow of Francis Weekes s/o Abraham Weekes of Middlesex County (Elizabeth m(2) by 1 Jun 1692 Caleb Welling); dau. Constance who m. William Daniel; dau. Elizabeth who m. James Curtis; dau. Catherine; and dau. Diana.
