Aka: John Smith of the Pocket. "John Smith, Jr., married January
27, 1747, Elizabeth Hopkins, the daughter of Col. Arthur Hopkins
of Goochland; was deputy sheriff of Albemarle County from
1750-54; deputy surveyor from 1755-58, surveyor of Goochland
County from 1758-62, when he moved to Pittsylvania County.

culture, wide business interest and much property. In his will
he named the following children: Ralph Smith, inherited "The
Pocket" and died unmarried; Bowker Smith; John Smith, married
Camella Thurman, and lived at "Lewis Island," on Pigg River;
Elizabeth Smith, married Samuel Calland; Anne Smith married
Captain William Calloway, son of .Col. William Calloway of
Bedford County; Samuel Smith married Mildred Ward, a daughter of
William Ward and has issue among others, Mildred Smith, who
married Mr. Richard Jones of Sheva... ....
The old dwelling house at "The Pocket" which stood in the bend
of me river, has long since disappeared. About 1830 Mr. Arch
Haley came into possession of the property and built an imposing
residence upon the bluff overlooking the bend."
