At this time John McCants had a son, Thomas, who was about four
years of age, destined later to be a Ruling Elder in the
Presbyterian Church for years. Near their home on or before the
year 1816 a hewn log house was built for a church in which they
worshiped until about 1819.
A discussion arose as to the ownership of the ground on which
the log church was erected, originally settled by Thomas
McCants, Sr., which was not legally entered by him. A neighbor,
Peter McArthur, procured government titles to the property and
thus brought on a dispute. As a result Thomas withdrew from the
Presbyterian Church and united with the Methodists.
He rec'd from his father, Thomas, in his Will 17 Jun 1791, a
negro man named DERRY with his wife HANNAH and half of the tract
of land I now live on.
(he may be the Thomas N. McCants wit on the will of 1823 for his
step-mother Ann Reid. Her son James McCants named a son Thomas
Newton McCants, but abt 12 yrs old in 1823, so he couldn't be
the wit.)
"The first record found of Thomas McCants in Alabama was the
1820 Census for Wilcox County where he was listed with 11
slaves. He apparently moved to Alabama about January 1819 when
he brought 10 slaves from South Carolina into Georgia."
Research required: Perhaps another Thomas McCants: South
Carolina Magazine of Ancestral Research, Vol. 3, The South
Carolina Magazine of Ancestral Research, Pages 268-270. 28 Mar.
1789. Robert Tate of Newbury County, S. C., conveys to Thomas
McCants of Abbeville County, state aforesaid, for £.20 sterling,
part of a certain tract of land in Ninety-Six District on
Hencoop Creek, waters of Savannah River, originally granted to
Robert Tate containing 640 acres, of which the said Thomas
M'Cants is to have 240 acres … along John Maxwell's line.
