The controversy over the Confederate battle flag and what it
symbolizes continues to rage. But it is rarely if ever explained
why many decent people of good will are so proud of their
Confederate ancestry.
Basically, it is because our ancestors showed amazing courage,
honor, and valor, enduring incredible hardships, against
overwhelming and often hopeless odds, in fighting, for their
homeland – not for slavery, as is so often said, but for their
families, homes, and country.
Put simply, most Confederate soldiers felt they were fighting
because an invading army from the North was trying to kill them,
burn their homes, and destroy their cities. And anyone with
family who fought to defend the South, as mine did, cannot help
but appreciate the dire circumstances our ancestors encountered.
Near the end of the War Between the States, my great
grandfather, Andrew Jackson Moses, who ran away from school to
become a Confederate scout, at 16 rode out to defend his
hometown of Sumter, South Carolina, as part of a hastily formed
local militia. Approaching rapidly was a unit of Sherman's army,
which had just burned Columbia and most everything else in its
path, and Sumter expected similar treatment.
Along with a few other teenagers, old men, invalids, and wounded
from the local hospital, Sumter’s rag-tag defenders amazingly
were able to hold off these battle-seasoned veterans, Potter’s
Raiders, for an hour-and-a-half, at the cost of several lives.
(Jack got away with a price on his head, and Sumter was not
burned after all. But some buildings were, and there were
documented instances of murder, rape, and arson by the Yankees,
including the torching of our family’s 196 bales of cotton.)

Older members of the family remember that a headstone at one
time existed in the Goshen Grove Cemetery stating John’s date of
birth as 1 Feb 1792 and his date of death as 26 Oct 1876; this
last date of death is supported by the Bible mentioned above.
Both John and Sarah are at rest in the Goshen Grove Cemetery."
"His will, dated 27 Mar 1874 and probated 3 Nov 1876 in Gaston
County, reads as follows:
I, John Rankin of Gaston County, North Carolina on this the 27
day of March 1874 make and publish this my last will and
testament.
First, I direct that my Executor shall pay all my just debts and
funeral expenses and put up a headstone to my grave.
Second, I will my clothes to William Rankin my grandson and my
bed to Nancy Rankin my granddaughter
Third, I will all the balance of my estate to be divided as
follows: to Margaret Moody one fourth, to Eliza Abernathy one
fourth, to William and Nancy Rankin one fourth and to my son
Alexander Rankin’s children one fourth.
I direct my Executor to sell my lands and divide the proceeds in
four equal parts.
I appoint my Brother Richard Rankin my Executor to do this my
last deed in witness whereof I set my hand seal.
John X Rankin his mark
T.F. Wilson
Hampton Padgett
John Rankin was also a soldier. The Charlotte Democrat, at his
passing on 26 Oct 1876, refers to him as "John Rankin, soldier
of the War of 1812." John Rankin was a man of property though
not an immense amount—perhaps 300 acres, most of which was
granted to him by his father long before William Rankin died.
This same land was passed down to his daughters and son,
Alexander, through various gifts and his will. John was
evidently well-thought of in his community as the Mecklenburg
Jeffersonian, on the occasion of his daughter Margaret’s
wedding, referred to him as "John Rankin, Esquire."
John and Sarah Farrar Rankin’s children:
1. Margaret A. Rankin . 'Moody'; . (Rankin);— b. 10 March 1819
d. 10 June 1916 (further)
2. Alexander N. Rankin .;— b. 1824 d. 21 July 1862 (further)
3. Sarah Eliza Rankin — b. 1826 d. 30 Aug 1892 (further)
The following grandchildren are also specifically named in this
will and are the children of Sarah Eliza Rankin Abernethey.
These two children are specifically named Rankin, however, and
were born out of wedlock:
1. William Rankin
2. Nancy Rankin
The executor of John’s will was his "brother Richard Rankin" as
the will states and so we know that John was the son of William,
the son of Samuel Rankin."
