Mother: Elvira HUNT |
He enlisted on April 27, 1862, defending the Confederacy. He
served the entire war and was discharged in December 1864. He
was a musician, a bugler, in Col. Black's regiment - 1st S.C.
Volunteer Cavalry (Confederate). He participated in many
battles, the most notable were Gettysburg, Brandy Station, and
Upperville.
Historic Unit: The First South Carolina Regiment of Cavalry
The First South Carolina Regiment of Cavalry as formed in 1861
and ordered up to Northern Virginia in the fall of 1862.
Assigned to Gen. Wade Hampton's Brigade, they participated in
numerous battles and engagements such as Chambersburg,
Fredericksburg, Brandy Station, Upperville, Gettysburg, Bristoe,
Kelly's Ford, and Mine Run. Ordered South to defend their native
state and surrounding areas in the fall of 1864, the First South
Carolina Cavalry served in the defense of the city of Savannah,
and the Campaign of the Carolinas. After four years of honorable
and gallant service, the First South Carolina Cavalry ended the
war with the Army of Tennessee in April of 1865.
After the war, in 1868, W. R. moved to Johnson County, Missouri.
No doubt the property that he had owned in South Carolina was
gone. At the age of 37, he married Elizabeth E. Wilson, who was
20 years his junior. They had 6 children (at least) on their
farm in Post Oak Township, Missouri. Tax list of 1902 lists W.
R. Bowman $204 (I believe this is the amount of tax owed, not
the value of the property).
W. R. farmed and like his brothers was also active in the local
political scene. He was elected in 1876 and again in 1880 to the
position of County Assessor for Johnson County.
In 1913 he applied for and was granted a pension for his
participation in the civil war. Missouri Pension #939. On the
pension application he spells his middle name with as Reece.
He is remembered as being called "Billy". He died in Missouri in
1914. Some researchers indicate that he is buried in the Bowen
area in Georges Creek Baptist Church, in Pickens County, S.C.
(1991 Saluda Dam Rd., Easley, SC 29640) (864) 859-6789) .
However, there is a tombstone marker in the Providence Cemetery
at Post Oak Township, Johnson County, Missouri that bears both
his name and his wife's name on the same stone. In requesting
death information from the state of Missouri, they were unable
to find a record of his death.
