Notes

"Page 13 of "The Settle-Suttle Family" by Col. Wm. Emmett Re ese, states the following, "Posthumous child, believed to have been named Francis, son of John and Margery Settle, was born in Potterton, Barwick-in-Elmet Parish, York County , England 1622-1623".

As set forth in Generation III, strong circumstantial evidence supports the belief that the posthumous child was named Francis. Unfortunately, it probably never will be possible to secure documentary evidence in support of this presumption since the baptism, marriage and burial registers of Barwick-in-Elmet parish are missing from 1602 to 1630 inclusive. In the book, "History of Barwick-in-Elmet", John Settle was listed in 1610 as glover of Potterton. In 1630, the following are listed:

"Heirs of John Settle, Heirs of John Settle, Heirs of Richard Settle, William Settle".

"In the list of tenants for 1678 is shown "Widow Settle". Also, "Widow Settle had the third part of her husband's copy hold estate paid to her in money over fourty years". Since John Settle died in Potterton 1622-23, Margery his widow would be the recipient of the estate over the 40 year period. The following is a partial list of manorial tenants, Potterton, about 1630:

"Heirs of John Settle, Heirs of John Settle, Heirs of Richard Settle, William Settle".
