Family tradition was that the indian maid was a Cherokee and the
tribe would not let them marry. He left everything he owned in
Kentucky and was afraid to go back. It is believed that the son
was William Andrew Gatewood, Jr. No record of the girl child
that was in the house in 1830 or the Indian wife.
William A. Gatewood was listed as one of the election judges at
Fargerson's Precint, August 1829. He removed to Scott Co. MS
about 1836 with his son, Jr. and no wife. In the 1850 census two
boys born in KY living in his household. Likely William Andrew
Gatewood, Jr. and Henry, the son of his brother, Anthony New
Gatewood.
William Andrew Gatewood, Sr. won an election in 1861 to serve on
the Board of Police. This was the first election ever held, as
the Governor had been appointing men to this position. he ran
against Sam West, a negro Republican. Gatewood got 129 votes to
West 88. Both Father and Son were Whigs.
He was on the census there from 1840 thru 1860 dying there in
1862. In 1850 he is shown with a wife, 18 years old and no
young children.
Hopewell Baptist Church in Scott County (a lot of Gatewoods are
buried there). Gatewoods, Harrisons, and Duckworths in the
Gatewood Cemetery. The Gatewood Cemetery: From Forest,
Mississippi take FM 501 - go 8 miles and follow sign to Hopewell
Baptist Church. Go .3 miles past the church and turn right. Go
200 feet and turn on the dirt road beside the house. The
cemetery is .2 miles on the left. The house belongs to I
believe it is Joe Gatewood.
