"I have been trying to prove a connection to Chief Joseph Brant
through Harriett Brant b. Abt 1838, as it has been passed down
in my family that she was a full American Indian, but that is
proving to be very difficult.
As for Harriet Brant, well she is a bit of an enigma. When I
speak with my older relatives about her all they seem to know
is that she was an American Indian. I have a suspicion that she
may have lived with Levi Edwards and his wife Melissa Swartz
after George Sr moved south.. I suspect this possibility as I
am told that there was some American Indian items in the Edwards
farmhouse in Moscow PA. I suppose they could have been passed
down but it makes sense that she would live with her daughters
family if needed.
I never got to see these items as the farmhouse was razed when I
was a teenager and had not taken an interest in my family
history yet. In actuality, I was only in the farmhouse twice. My
cousins ( Stout ) lived in it. The house was in disrepair and
did not have running water ( this was in the 70's and 80's) and
it always kind of scared me. I guess the ghost stories I had
been told by my father and my cousins didn't help either. They
told me of Levi appearing to them now and again. Apparently, he
was a strict disciplinarian who ruled his children "with the
Bible in one hand and a bullwhip in the other" as I am told by
my relatives. As the stories go, he would appear when children
were misbehaving or being disrespectful in the house. At any
rate the house was burned down by the fire company to make room
for a new home which incidentally was never built. I do not know
what became of the Indian artifacts rumored to have existed, but
I still hope to one day find an uncle, aunt or cousin that might
have some or know where they are."
