"Chambless, Ann Barbee. MY FAVORITE TURKS. Privately Printed. Page 9. "Thomas Turk, Sr.'s second wife was Mary Gleaves, and this writer is presently convinced that she and Thomas Turk, Sr. married about 1769.

Mary Turk's father, Matthew Gleaves, died in 1760, and her mother married Thomas Raferty in 1762 and "possessed herself of Matthew Gleaves' whole estate even though Mary Gleaves and William Gleaves were of age. (CHRONICLES OF THE SCOTCH IRISH, Chalkley, Vol. I, p .365.)

Shortly after Mary and Thomas Turk, Sr.'s marriage in 1769 or early 1770, this idea must have struck Thomas Turk, Sr., and on May 22, 1771, he filed suit against Esther Gleaves Raferty to rectify this situation. Under Virginia law, she was only entitled to dower rights from her deceased husband's estate. About the time this suit was filed, William Gleaves, Mary Gleaves Turk's oldest brother, filed a petition to become guardian of his minor brothers and sisters, who were Michael, Esther, Elizabeth and Matthew Gleaves Jr. (CHRONICLE S,Vol. I, p. 163.)"

Turk vs. Raferty. - Chancery. Writ 22d May 1771. Thomas Turk and Margaret (Mary), his wife, William Grove, Elizabeth Grove, Michael Grove, Easter Grove and Mathew Grove, infants, by Wm. Grove, their guardian, complain. In 1760, father of oratrixes, Matthew Grove, died intestate, leaving widow, Esther (since intermarried with Thomas Laferty [sic]), defendants. Widow possessed herself of whole estate. Mary Turk and William Groves were of age. Suit for account."

The pages were removed by Johnnie Nettles Powers and have been laminated and are now in the possession of S. S. Nettles' granddaughter, Mrs. Robert Marbut, who submitted them for publication.

Memoranda: (This page was written by Mrs. Powers.)
Dr. S. S. Nettles, owner of this Bible, 1829-1897. S. S. Nettles - born May 26, 1829. His mother was Elizabeth Baxter. Reared an orphan. His father died before his birth. Raised by his great uncle John Nettles, whose chief ambition was fox hunting. S. S. (familiarly called "Brook") was thrown on his own resources at age of nine years. Went to work at errands for Jim Knox Merchantile Co. in Clinton (E. Feliciana Parish). Later attended school at Centenary College, Jackson, La., and one or two years at a Kentucky Military school. In 1852 he entered the Medical College of the University of Louisiana, New Orleans, La., from which he was graduated in 1856. The college was the forerunner of Tulane University.

S. S. Nettles married Miss Elizabeth Jane Chaney. Six children were born to them. His second wife was Mrs. Sallie Brown - nee Chaney. Five children from this union. He died June 12, 1897. After a long and useful career as a country physician in the community of Grangeville, La., he was laid to rest at old Bluff Creek Church near the little village where he had lived almost forty years. He was first a Methodist, but joined the Baptist Church after he became 21 years of age. He loved and served his fellowman and his God. (End of Mrs. Powers' notes).
