County Review", Vol. III, Issue 4, Winter, 1989. From "Adair
County, Kentucky Wills", page 67, taken from Adair County Will
Book "C". "Will of Thomas Turk of Adair County, written 10
December 1825, proven February term of court 1826, Legatees:
wife Margaret; "...each of my children when they marry or become
of age..."; children now married--Hiram, Amanda and William.
Executors: wife Margaret, so nHiram and Thomas Gillmer.
Witnesses: Thomas Gilmer and Hiram Turk."
Westerfield, Thomas W., ed. "Kentucky Genealogy and Biography,
Vol. V. Owensboro, KY: Genealogical Reference Co., 1975. Page
286. "Thomas Turk was a first lieutenant in the American Army in
the War of 1812, and a native of Virginia, immigrated first to
one of the counties of the blue grass region and later to the
county of Adair, where he spent the remainder of his life."
Letter from Nancy Berly dated 8 July 1973. "Thomas Turk died in
Adair County at his home 27 Jan 1826. He made his will in
December, 1825. The story is that the was having trouble with a
man named Butler who threatened to kill him. They had a fight in
Columbia and Thomas Turk was hit in the head with a hand spike
and never regained full consciousness. I have never been able to
find the records of this case- all I can find is where his
oldest son Hiram is being arrested about this time for fighting
and the charges are always dismissed. The family tradition is
that his brothers came from Virginia and Tennessee to avenge
him! Wish I could find out who they were - I do not know whose
son he was. He was born ca 1782 according to census records. He
married Wythe County, VA 25 Dec 1802 Margaret Gleaves....I think
the Thomas who came to Adair County was some way descended from
James Turk (son of Thomas Turk, son of Robert Turk) - there is
record that Thomas Turk got two land warrants as heir of James
and Robert Turk who died in camp during the Revolution - One was
used and the other years later turned in for script - it was
turned in after Thomas died in Adair County and I can't prove it
was mine - but the script was turned over to Nathan Gaither,
congressman from Columbia - if he was dead there must have been
quite a bit of proof. I spent a small fortune trying to get this
record and all I get is the photo copies of the two warrants.
Thomas (Adair County) was a Lieutenant in War of 1812 and
Margaret later got a land warrant on his service. He served in
Thomas W. Shirely's company and had guard duty at St .Mary's."
Kathleen T. Lee, Kent, WA, states that Thomas Turk III was a
member of the Shiloh Presbyterian Church. His occupation was
listed as Planter. Community offices held listed as Justice of
the Peace. Norris Turk gives death date as 27 Feb 1826, Darlene
Henson as 18 Feb 1826."
