Cite in Southern Sojourners: Will of John Pettey dated 26 July
1768 and proved 27 Sept 1770 Orange Co., VA. Will Bk. 2:422-424.
Will of John Pettey bequeathed five shillings each 'To my
daughters Sarah Corley and Tabitha Edward and my son Luke Petty
who are now in Carolina ...'
Evidently Thomas and James Pettey were in the household of
Shirley WHATLEY in Granville co. NC along with John and Robert
Cally [CORLEY] 1750-1751. I believe Shirley Whatley m. Rebecca
CORLEY; he died c1778 but there is much confusion regarding him
- some say perhaps he m. Rebecca CHERRY. I also have CHERRY in
my husband's line so am much confused in regard to this issue.
This Rebecca CORLEY is likely the dau of Richard CORLEY and
would therefore be the aunt of John and Robert Corley above.
