Notes

"Hannah's family was the 2nd owners of Mt. Vernon. Hannah died either at the birth of her son, Howson, or shortly thereafter. CURRY DESCENDANTS by Judge Noble K. Littell pp24 ref#852 .

Hannah was the daughter of Leonard Howson Sr and Elizabeth Lee d/o Richard I. Hannah died CA 1713 in Northumberland, VA. Alder shows marriage date as 1 JUN 1729 same year as death . .. but 3 children all born in the early 1700's makes me think that there's ben an error ... this should be looked into. Birthdate is 27 DEC 1677.
Cottrell shows 18 DEC 1681 with a death date of 1728 (before) Marriage date is 1706 at St Stephens Parish, Northumberland, VA."

Notes

"Honorable Presley Thornton b. 1721, d. 12/8/1769 (epitaph), will proved 5/14/1770. Charlotte Thornton his 2nd wife, took her three sons Presley, Charles Wade, and John Tayloe to England shortly before the Revolution. This lady's loyalty was very favorable remunerated after her arrival for she was allowed by the King, a pension, and her sons Presley and Charles were placed in the army, and John in the navy. There was an "understanding" that they would not be employed in service against the colonies. All three served in the British services with Presley wounded at the siege of Gibraltar. In 1783 John returned to VA. Following the Revolution, Presley was in the US army at the request of General Washington and served in the 8th U.S.Infantry in 1799, and was honorably discharged 6/15/1800. John was wounded in the most desperate naval battle ever fought, between an English and French frigate."

"On May 17, 1744, William Black, the Scottish secretary of the Commission, recorded in his diary: This morning ... in the Company with the Honble. Commissioners, and the Gentlemen of their Levees, Colonels John Tayloe Junr. and Presly Thornton, Warner Lewis, Philip Ludwell Lee, James Littlepage and Robert Brooke Esquires, I Embark'd on Board the Margaret Yacht lying off Stratford on Potomac, and about 10 minutes after was under Sail, with a small Breeze of Wind ... our back Ensign Pennon flying; after the Vessel had got way, with the Trumpet we hail'd the Company (who came to the Water side to see us on Board) with Fare-you-well, who returned the Compliment, wishing us a Good Voyage and safe Return, for which, on the part of the Company, I gave them Thanks with the Discharge of our Blunderbuss."

"Washington (George), writing in 1777, when appointing one of his (Presley's) sons to office, speaks of "the greatest worth of his father," and again in 1799, says he was "one of the most respectable gentlemen, now deceased, of this State." --Ford's Writings of Washington."
