In 1861 he became depot agent for the A&V RR in Newton, Miss.
and discontinued the practice of medicine.
In the same year he started a Sunday School in a log house and
was the superintendent for many years. He was also a steward
and trustee and was a fervent man of prayer. Josiah Thrashley
and his wife Jane spent their lives looking after the welfare of
their loved ones. They reared his niece Corrie Watts whose
mother died when she was very young whose father was Thomas
Watts who also lived in Newton. So many of the loved ones lived
and died in the home. They lived to celebrate their 50th
wedding anniversary in September 1900. Their lives were spent
in doing good for others. All this family buried in the Baptist
Cemetery in Newton, Miss."
1870 Census shows all his family (two up from brother Thomas
Watts) on the 1870 Census states "Practicing Medicine".
Children:
i. Cornelia A. Watts, born Bef. September 1852 in MS; died June
26, 1902 in Newton, MS.
ii. Horace Howze Watts, born September 24, 1853 in Neshoba
County, MS; died February 18, 1935; married Emma Gatewood
October 28, 1875 in At the homestead in Scott County, MS.
iii. Alonzo Thomas Watts, born July 26, 1855 in Newton, MS; died
October 12, 1882 in Newton, MS.
iv. Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" Watts, born Abt. 1857; died December
23, 1933 in Newton, MS.
v. John Black Watts, born 1859; died 1869.
